Peppermint / Kodi in it's own window
« on: June 20, 2016, 09:38:37 pm »
Hi guys

I have a PC running Peppermint 6 with Kodi & Steam installed, I've set it to boot straight into kodi and installed the Steam addon form here so I can launch steam directly from Kodi missing out the desktop but the launcher only works if I run Kodi from the desktop It wont work if Kodi is running in it's own session

I posted my problem on the Kodi forum and was told by the developer himself I need to make Kodi run in it's own window or use the Steam compositor the problem is I don't know how to do either so I posted back asking how I do that and so far haven't received a reply.

So can anybody here explain how to either make Kodi run in it's own window or use the Steam compositor ?

the conversation is here

General Help & Advice / Steam on Kubuntu 16.04
« on: June 10, 2016, 07:59:38 pm »
Hi Guys

I'm trying to get steam running on Kubuntu 16.04, It installed ok from the repos via apt-get but when I click on the steam icon nothing happens, running from the terminal giver this error message

Code: [Select]
graeme@Media-Centre:~$ steam
Running Steam on ubuntu 16.04 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
[2016-06-10 19:47:42] Startup - updater built Apr 29 2016 22:18:33
SteamUpdateUI: An X Error occurred
X Error of failed request:  BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)

I searched for a solution and found this page

This solution
Code: [Select]
LD_PRELOAD='/usr/$LIB/' DISPLAY=:0 steam

worked except it wont load my steam library even though I'm logged in

Apparently this issue is caused by the open source AMD GPU drivers but I have an Nvidia Geforce card

Code: [Select]
graeme@Media-Centre:~$ sudo lshw -c display
[sudo] password for graeme:
       description: VGA compatible controller

General Help & Advice / No Terminal Steamos desktop
« on: June 01, 2016, 09:20:11 pm »
Hi guys

I've recently installed Steamos on a seperate HDD on my PC as part of an experiment, the steam client is working perfect but when I access the Debian Gnome desktop I can't open a terminal when I click on the icon it cycles for about 10 seconds then nothing, as a result I can't set myself up as a user so I can't get sudo access to add repos and install software and as this is a stripped down version of Debian it's totally useless without a terminal, I've tried restoring the Steam partition to no avail

Any ideas ?

General Help & Advice / No internet with static IP
« on: February 15, 2016, 06:00:32 pm »
Hi guys

I've just installed Peppermint 6 on a new ssd hard drive and everything is fine except when I set my network for static ip I can't access the internet, although I can access my NAS shares on the network, if I set it for DCHP and reboot the internet is restored,

the other odd thing about this issue is that my NAS (Openmediavault) appears to be having the same problem as it isn't offering updates unless I set it to DHCP.

My own thoughts was that this is a router issue but my wifes PC is set to static IP on the same network and it's fine

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

General Help & Advice / quickbooks not seeing printer
« on: February 07, 2016, 03:26:16 pm »
I've been struggling with this for a while now and I can't find an answer

I'm running Peppermint 6 with Quickbooks running in Crossover, it runs perfectly but for some reason it wont see my HP printer, the odd thing is it recognises an Epson 6x4 printer I have installed but obviously that's no use for Quickbooks other application such as Libre Office can see the HP  and print to it fine but not Quickbooks, I've tried un-installing all printers and re-installing the HP only but that didn't work,

any ideas ?

General Help & Advice / Archiving Commandline style
« on: January 28, 2016, 07:10:07 am »
Hi guys

I'm currently doing an on online course and I've got an assignment to backup my home directory to /tmp

here's he question
What would be a way to back-up all your files and subdirectories found in your login directory and put them into a tarball file out in /tmp called backup.tar ?

the solution according to the courseware is..
Code: [Select]
tar -cvf /tmp/backup.tar "

This doesn't work all I get following that command is an > _ at the commmand prompt so clearly I'm not implementing it properly
I've no idea what the " at the end signify but if I remove them  I get this output

Code: [Select]
graeme@Linux1 ~ $ sudo tar -cvf /tmp/backup.tar
[sudo] password for graeme:
tar: Cowardly refusing to create an empty archive
Try 'tar --help' or 'tar --usage' for more information.
graeme@Linux1 ~ $

I've tried other variations too numerous to mention but I can't get anything to work, so can any of you commandline gurus give me a clue what I'm doing wrong and why the solution didn't work

Many Thanks

General Help & Advice / Scheduling with Luckybackup
« on: January 11, 2016, 07:03:12 pm »
Hi guys

Over the past fews days I've been banging my head against a brick wall trying to find a way to back up my home folders (2 user accounts) to a second internal HDD and schedule it to run automatically through the night.

I want the backup to be a straightforward copy so I could restore any individual file or folder without restoring the whole backup.

I've tried various applications such as Backintime Gadmin rsync and one or two others but by far the the best for what I want seems to be Luckybackup it's simple to use and understand and backs up the folders I want the way I want it done providing i do it manually. the problem is i cant get to work automatically with the scheduler, the scheduler is very simple to set up but when the set time come up nothing happens and no errors reported, Luckybackup comes with a very good handbook and followed the instructions letter for letter but it just wont work

I have cron installed but I don't know if the daemon is running or if there is anything else I need to get this to work

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

This is almost a carbon copy of what I've done and it works ok it's just I can't get to run a a cron job

I've followed these instructions to the letter and it just doesn't do anything

General Help & Advice / Cannot install Crossover (SOLVED)
« on: January 05, 2016, 04:08:49 pm »
I'm trying to install Crossover on Peppermint 6 and I'm getting this error message "Cannot install libglu1-mesa:i386"  I've tried versions 14.1.4-1, 14.6-1 & 15.0.0-1 and they all fail with the same error message, the strange thing is I've installed it successfully on another PC wth the exact same version of Peppermint without any issues.

I've searched the internet for this issue and although there are other reports of this no one seems to have a solution

Any help would be much appreciated

General Help & Advice / Mythtv setup
« on: December 19, 2015, 08:01:19 am »
Hi guys

Hi guys this is connected to a previous post (Betamax blues) but I thought it would be beter to start a new thread.

I'm trying to install Mythtv on Peppermint 6 I've downloaded Mythtv from the repos,

according to youtube videos I've watched all I need to do is open Mythv Backend to set up the mysql server but when I do that I get a screen to select country and language then on the next screen I'm told Mythtv can't connect to the database as per screenshot if I click Next I'm taken back to the language/country screen so I'm going round i circles, I don't know anything about mysql and it could be I need to install some other packages.

any help or advice would be much appreciated

General Help & Advice / Betamax blues
« on: December 15, 2015, 09:28:57 pm »
Hi guys

A while ago I got a Betamax Video recorder to digitize some old family video footage I filmed on Betamax years ago, I managed to digitize them ok using an old Hauppaupe PCI video capture card and xawtv, I'm trying to do the same again with another video I've found The problem is although I can tune into the video and record no problem I can't get audio yet I must have got it before because I have previously done this.

Initially xawtv was throwing up an error along the lines of no oss device found but I seemed to have solved that by installing oospd from synaptic so now it will go through the motions of recording but all I get is an empty .wav file.

I my memory serves me right the last time I did this it never streamed the sound but it did record it but this time I'm getting neither,

any help or suggestions would be welcome

Many thanks in advance

General Discussion / Reasons to be thankful
« on: December 06, 2015, 05:27:31 pm »
Hi guys

I was watching last weeks Linux Action Show which was based on reasons to be be thankful for Linux and open source in general and there was a few projects put forward such as openssl and apache etc,

for me Linux and open source flies in the face of the general rule that "you only get what you pay for" which is generally true but FOSS is one of the few things in this world (possibly the only thing) that is actually free with no strings attached and for that I am extremely thankful

So I'm just curious what FOSS projects are you guys most thankful for  ?

General Help & Advice / What extension pack for Virtualbox (SOLVED)
« on: November 03, 2015, 10:40:16 pm »
Hi guys

I'm trying to get WinXP running in a VM I have virtualbox and guest additions v 4.3.10-1 but I need the extension pack for USB support, I went on the Oracle website and downloaded various extension pack .debs including ubuntu-precise 64bit, ubuntu-Trusty 64bit, ubuntu Trusty 32bit, but every one I tried to install fails with an error about a conflict with the guest additions version I'm running, as far as I can see there is only 2 guest additions iso's in synaptic and the one I have is the only one that will install the other fails with some other error

the Oracle website offers 4 extension packs depending on what version of VB I'm running v4.0.34, v4.1.42, v4.2.34 & v4.3.32, the version I've installed from the repos is v4.3.10 I've tried all 4 extension packs and they all fail with the same conflict/mismatch error

Many thanks
