Synaptic crashes and causes your system to lag ?

Well im not 100% its synpatic causing it, might be another issue, but it acted the same way as software center, in the way i descriped.

Im running Ubuntu 12.10 on an Acer Travelmate 4320 (not sure if this info helps but it cant hurt)

Back in ten mins .. and we'll see if clearing the package cache and lists helps.

Run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg --configure -a
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get -f install
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get clean
then
Code: [Select]
sudo mv -v /var/lib/apt/lists /var/lib/apt/lists.backup
then
Code: [Select]
sudo mkdir -p /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update

Does the last command finish without error .. if so, try Synaptic and/or Software Centre now .. any improvement ?

Ran them in seqence, without any errors, nothing really changed :(

I did notice that synaptics run ALOT better than software center, SC is alot worse.

Starting to think this might be a problem with my computer and not with ubuntu.

The only other thing I can suggest is you go through the logs and see if you can spot anything.

I was just suffering from the same issue. It turned out that I had recently added the Jitsi repository. Removing it manually from the sources file solved the crashes. If you've added any repositories, or if you opted one to be added by some software you installed, this could be causing the issue.

Hope that helps.

Hi joebush, and welcome to the forum :)

Thanks for that .. I'm sure it will help someone who finds themselves in the same boat.

Personally I don't use the Ubuntu Software Centre .. I prefer Synaptic as my package manager .. it's certainly more stable ;)
