or have you got a separate modem which connects to the web?

If you have, get rid of it "right now" .. go on, find your bin and chuck it in .. preferably hit it with a hammer a few times first :)

you REALLY need to be behind a NAT router :)

NAT = Network Address Translation:

Take it from me, if your router has more than 1 port for ethernet cables, and/or wireless .. it's a NAT router ;)

Is this the box the internet provider gives a client when they join?

Yes, the one that plugs into your phone line (via a splitter filter), and probably has 4 other ethernet sockets on the back.

So if you are using a mobile phone as the router how does that fit in with nat?

Just curious, don't want to go off topic but phones are being used more often.

You should be running gufw and have blocked incoming connections.

The main desktop computer is connected directly through cable, it is not wireless enabled.. When we got laptops and notebooks which require a wireless router we had to get Virgin Media to supply a router so that that they could be used.

Have you got 2 separate connections to the Virgin cable as it enters into your premises?

I think what Mark & SeZo are trying to establish is, Is the cable from your PC connected to the router or the cable modem and is the cable ethernet or USB ?

If you can keep your head while all around are losing theirs, then you're not quite grasping the situation

Yes I get what you mean now- I have a router from my internet provider and it's wi fi. My phone line is also in it.
