OK, before we do this ..

Do you know how to access the GRUB menu at boot ?

Sut down your PC, then turn it back on .. immediately after turning on the PC, hit and hold the "Shift" key .. eventaully you should be presented with the GRUB boot menu.

When at the menu, just hit enter to boot the default kernel

I just want you to confirm you're able to do this before I post instructions for installing the 3.9 kernel.

Thanks Mark.

Holding down the Shift key while the system  restarts didn't show up the GRUB menu. Tried multiple times (including a try where I 'stabbed' the Shift key while the sys was rebooting). Also, I noticed error messages that just flash by as the system restarts: 1. Secure boot not enabled, 2. error: efidisk read error, 3. could not write bytes: broken pipe.

Looks like I'm heading towards yet another reinstall!  :-\

Is this a dual boot setup ?

We can force the GRUB menu to appear every boot, whilst we try this if you want ..

run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
then find the lines that read

GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true

and change them to

GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=-1
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=false

SAVE the file and close gedit.

Now back in the terminal, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub

Now reboot and see if the GRUB menu is displayed for 10 seconds before automatically continuing to boot. ?

I've changed the

GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=10
to
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=-1

in my last posting.

Also be careful if you copy paste the whole lines from above .. for some reason an extra space gets inserted .. probably best to edit by hand.

And don't forget to run:
Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub
after making the edits.

Thanks Mark. It worked!

Changed GRUB_HIDDEN_TI MEOUT=-1 and GRUB_HIDDEN_TI MEOUT_QUIET=false. The GRUB menu appeared and stayed for a while, and then system resumed boot process. (those error messages, that I mentioned earlier, remained though)

We'll worry about those later (if they become a problem) .. they may not be a problem at all, dunno yet.

OK, the reason I wanted you to have access to the GRUB menu is so if installing the 2.9 kernel causes the system to not boot .. you can (at the GRUB menu, go to the

Previous versions

menu item, and hit enter TWICE, to boot the  Ubuntu 3.8.0-31 kernel.

OK, if you understand that, let's install the 3.9 kernel .. run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
mkdir ~/3.9-kernel
then
Code: [Select]
cd ~/3.9-kernel
then
Code: [Select]
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-raring/linux-headers-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_amd64.deb
then
Code: [Select]
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-raring/linux-headers-3.9.0-030900_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_all.deb
then
Code: [Select]
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-raring/linux-image-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_amd64.deb
then
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

If those commands run without error .. REBOOT (and just let GRUB count down and boot the new default 3.9 kernel)

When booted, run:
Code: [Select]
uname -a
to make sure you're running the 3.9 kernel .. if so, test wireless.

REMEMBER, if it won't boot with 3.9 .. you can select 3.8.0-31 from the GRUB "previous versions sub menu.

Hey Mark. I just wanted to say thanks. I dropped this thread a couple months ago because the machine was for work and I found myself close enough to the wires to not worry about wireless and just went about my day.

Thank you for all your feedback and interaction.  Aside from the shear knowledge, the effort in your questions and formatting them clearly is just above and beyond.  So yeah. Thank you!

Thanks for the detailed steps, Mark!

Followed all the steps and no errors were reported. Rebooted. GRUB menu showed up. By default 3.9 kernel loaded. Wireless couldn't connect. Wired connection was lost as well. Tried 3.9 a couple of times with the same result.

Switched back to 3.8.

OK, boot to the 3.8 kernel and post the output from:
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep 3.9.0

OK, whilst booted to the 3.8 kernel, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-3.9.0-030900-generic linux-headers-3.9.0-030900 linux-image-3.9.0-030900-generic
that will remove the 3.9 kernel .. automatically setting 3.8 back as the default.

OK, looks like we have 2 options left

a) look into the 3.2 kernel, and compiling the rt3290sta driver <-- this should work, but I need to do a bit of homework to check if it's safe to do so from the 12.04.3 image .. and if the "extras" package is necessary.
(oddly, earlier versions of 12.04 came with the 3.2 kernel by default .. but I'm unsure if it's possible to downgrade 12.04.3 .. or whether you'd be better off installing an earlier version of 12.04, then refusing the 3.8 kernel if it's offered as an upgrade .. I need to check this)

b) use a USB stick

Let me know if you want me to look into the 3.2 kernel.

How prepared are you for a complete reinstall if things go horribly wrong ?

Thanks Mark.

As the system is very new, there isn't much on it  that is critical. So, we could try doing a clean install of 12.04 with 3.2 (if that is available) and refusing any kernel upgrades till 3290 gets support from any of the future kernel versions.

While this is getting sorted out and if need be, I can go back to my earlier notebook (running Windows  ;D )

OK, first thing to do .. get yourself a copy of Ubuntu 12.04.1 from here:
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04.1/ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso
and burn it to disk, just in case.

Do NOT get 12.04.2 .. as that used the 3.5 kernel series .. which also won't compile the Ralink driver.

But don't install it yet.

If you're OK to reinstall (if necessary), I reckon maybe we should try the 3.2 kernel in your current install, and see what happens .. If it screws things up .. THEN you can reinstall from the 12.04.1 disk you burned.

What do you reckon ?
