Thanks Mark.

I am downloading 12.04.1 from the link that you gave. As I don't have a blank CD at my disposal for now, can I create a LiveUSB using some tool like Unetbootin?

It's okay to reinstall. So, I'll back up some of the files while it is getting downloaded.

You most certainly can :)

Creating a LiveUSB stick in Ubuntu based distros -

First you'll need too install usb-creator-gtk, so open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install usb-creator-gtk

Then search your menu's for Startup Disk Creator

Here's what to expect -

I've found it's usually best to let it format the USB stick first, so in the bottom pane select your USB stick, and hit the "Erase Disk" button, and enter your password if prompted.

Once the format is done, in the top pane, select the ISO image you want to create the LiveUSB stick from (if it's not already there, browse to it by clicking the "Other" button)

If you want the LiveUSB to be persistent (ie. able to save changes), make sure "Store in reserved extra space" is selected, and use the slider to adjust the size of the persistence file (the amount of room set aside for saving changes).

Click the "Make Startup Disk" button.

You'll be prompted for your password a couple of times before it tells you the LiveUSB has been created and is ready for use.

Thanks Mark.

So, now the LiveUSB disk is ready and all the important files backed up separately.

OK, run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
mkdir ~/kernel-3.2
then
Code: [Select]
cd ~/kernel-3.2
then
Code: [Select]
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.2.34-precise/linux-headers-3.2.34-030234-generic_3.2.34-030234.201211161335_amd64.deb
then
Code: [Select]
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.2.34-precise/linux-headers-3.2.34-030234_3.2.34-030234.201211161335_all.deb
then
Code: [Select]
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.2.34-precise/linux-image-3.2.34-030234-generic_3.2.34-030234.201211161335_amd64.deb
then
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Now if all that went well, reboot .. but when you get to the GRUB menu, use the down arrow key to highlight "Previous versions" and hit enter .. then use the down arrow key to select the 3.2 kernel (not the one that mentions recovery mode), and hit enter to boot.

If it boots, come back here and post the output from:
Code: [Select]
uname -a

If it doesn't boot .. reboot, and just let the GRUB menu count down and boot normally, and it'll boot 3.8

OK, boot to your 12.04.1 LiveUSB and tell me if the wired connection works or not.

Just to be sure, I understand this correctly - "boot to your 12.04.1 LiveUSB " means - use the "Try" option instead of "Install" option with LiveUSB. Right?

YES .. Select Try Ubuntu .. then when at the Live session desktop, see if a wired connection works.

Both, Wireless and Wired, not available when booted with LiveUSB. Tried a couple of times. Back to 3.8! :(

(Are we about to hit the wall?  :-\ )

Not quite .. we can try booting to the 3.2 kernel (not the LiveUSB) and compiling/installing the wireless driver (as you already have the headers and build-essential installed).

Half of it will have to be done offline, so probably best to copy these instructions to a text file on your desktop whilst running 3.8

OK, whilst in 3.8 run:
Code: [Select]
mkdir ~/rt3290-for-3.2
then
Code: [Select]
cd ~/rt3290-for-3.2
then
Code: [Select]
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11876059/DPO_RT3290_LinuxSTA_V2600_20120508.tar.gz
then
Code: [Select]
tar -xvf DPO_RT3290_LinuxSTA_V2600_20120508.tar.gz
Now reboot to the 3.2 kernel, then run:
Code: [Select]
cd ~/rt3290-for-3.2/DPO_RT3290_LinuxSTA_V2600_20120508
then
Code: [Select]
sudo su
then
Code: [Select]
make
then
Code: [Select]
make install
then
Code: [Select]
exit
then
Code: [Select]
gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blaclist.conf
when a file opens with some stuff already in it, ADD these 3 NEW lines at the bottom:-

# Added by vishal to correct conflict with rt3290sta
blacklist rt2800pci
blacklist rt2x00pci

SAVE the file, and exit gedit.

Now run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/modules

when a file opens with some stuff already in it, ADD a single NEW line at the bottom that reads:-

rt3290sta

Save the file, and exit gedit.

Now REBOOT back into the 3.2 kernel again

Does wireless work ?

Thanks for detailed instructions, Mark! Truly appreciated! :)

All of this will take a tad longer. It's already mid-night! Will come back tomorrow with the results! Till then...

Good Morning, Mark!

It just won't budge!   ??? No wired, no wireless! Time for some hard line action now?
