Quick quiz .. who can spot the difference between these 2 commands -

There is no difference, I created a folder and named it as the first command, then created another folder in the same directory and tried to name it as the second command and I was told another directory with the same name already exists.

So that would suggest to me both commands are identical

I'm at work at the moment so haven't had a chance to try the last instructions you posted but I will when I get home

Many thanks

Sorry, got called out .. anyway, now we're getting somewhere :)

If you've rebooted, run this again:
Code: [Select]
sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.2.4/multimedia /mnt/freenas/multimedia -o username=graeme,password=CHANGE_ME,iocharset=utf8,dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0777
then:
Code: [Select]
nautilus /mnt/freenas/multimedia
a file manager window will open, use it to navigate to a video on the NAS and see if it plays properly .. does it ?

Has the IP address of the freenas box changed ? .. you're going to have to give it a static IP, or we're going to have to work out why it's not able to do name rsolution.

Do you know how yo give the NAS a static IP ?

Hi mark

Sorry I'm giving you all this grief

The IP could well have changed because now I can't access the NAS at all even gigolo can't find it, but I only discovered that this morning before I went to work so didn't have a lot of time to study the situation, I planned to check that I can still access the NAS via peppermint or via another PC to make sure the NAS hasn't went down but I can't do that until I get home this evening

Once again thanks for all your help

Graeme

Ok the situation is worse than I hoped, I had no network connection whatsoever or internet, network manager was seeing nearby connections but not my own, eventually I had to replace the router with an old one I had lying around, but I'm having a problem getting the router to assign an ip address to the NAS, I'm rebooting the NAS again I'll let you know shortly how it goes

I think you may have to configure the NAS to static IP instead of DHCP

If you do not know how to log in using your browser then see here

Thank you SeZo

I think you're right I am gonna have to configure the NAS for static ip but it should assign an IP address on boot,  I need it to do that so that I can access the web GUI from my PC , as it turned out I had to use another ethernet card on the NAS before it would work and assign an IP address, so it's working at the moment and I can access all my network drives and the web GUI, but I can't understand how a router and an ethernet card can both screw up at the same time

Many thanks

Graeme

Ok where we are at the moment

I had to replace the router to connect to the network I just couldn't get it to connect to the original at all, it connected instantly when I connected the spare router, but the NAS wouldn't assign an address fortunately I have 2 ethernet cards insude the NAS and when I connected through the spare card it assigned an IP address instantly, and everything is back to where we were

I'm looking into setting a static address for the NAS through the web gui but I'm not quite sure I hoping for some help there.

That's where we are at the moment
