Security update, is this right?
« on: March 04, 2013, 01:54:22 am »
Got this as an important security update today but it just didn't sound right, what do you wise owls think?

Quote
Sudo is a program designed to allow a sysadmin to give limited root privileges to users and log root activity.
The basic philosophy is to give as few privileges as possible but still allow people to get their work done.
This version is built with minimal shared library dependencies, use the sudo-ldap package instead if you need LDAP support for sudoers.
If you need help ask a professional, then act upon their advice.
Anything less and you're just wasting peoples time.

I'm not sure what you're asking.  Are you unsure on what sudo is?

The sudo command is exactly what it says in your post, a program designed to give limited root privileges.  You should never run your Linux machine logged in as the root user.  To allow users to perform root tasks you enter them in a list of sudoers.

More information can be found on Wikipedia or here.

If you're asking if it's a legitimate update .. YES :)

There is an update to sudo in the 12.04 repo's .. I got it too.

Sorry for not making myself clear glitch.
Mark,
Yes, I was wondering if it is legit.
I was thinking that if a virus needed to instal itself then a pre-virus hidden in the updates that gives 'certain programs' root privileges would be the way to do it.
After all, how many people read the information before installing the updates?
Thanx for your help.

Mmm, you have to trust the Repo's your using .. certainly in the past some repos have been compromised and viruses have indeed made their way to user's PCs, but I think they try quite hard to keep them secure.

Just be a little bit careful if you download stuff from third party repos... doesn't matter what the application is, the installer runs as root, so if there is something nasty in the package, there's no real protection ...
