peppermint 3 on a Desktop with vista [solved]
« on: March 20, 2013, 10:16:21 pm »
Hi guys,
Thanks for your previous help but sad now to say i,m stuck again.I decided not to totally trash vista in favor of Peppermint 3 but wanted to duel boot, Well use them both and switch as required as i,ve allot of programs I use these were not cheap to purchase. Saying that I made an ISO and set it away installing as duel boot on my C:/drive. I,d built the computer myself many moons ago, adding memory hard disks and the like until I had a decent enough system. 1.5TB H/Drive, 4 gig memory enough for me, DVD writer etc etc(which is probably out of date now).?
I noticed whilst installing the OS, it would not pull in Thunderbird or Skype. Terminal telling me, it could not find the package?
So i can,t redirect my mail or chat to mum in Holland, just using Peppermint OS. I find I must come out and restart my computer then go back into vista to use Skype and the email in vista when needing to talk to family. Please help, mums old and I need to keep in touch, she,s 87. :-\

Make SURE you have an active internet connection in Peppermint, then ..

Go to menu>System Tools>Synaptic Package Manager

In Synaptic go to Settings>Repositories

On the "Peppermint Software" tab:-

Make sure ALL 4 boxes are ticked.

On the "Other Software" tab:-

Make sure ALL boxes are ticked EXCEPT -

cdrom:[Peppermint 3_Three_ - Release i386 (20120423)]/ precise

(In particular you need to make 100% sure the "Partner" repositories are ticked)

Click Close

Close Synaptic. <-- this is important

Open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install skype thunderbird

You should now find Skype and Thunderbird in the menus at:- menu>Internet

Hi Mark,
the answer to that question, is No. Briefly I,ve done all you asked, (and nowt) it tells me:- "Skype package not found", I look to see if Thunderbird is there and it,s not. Mark for some reason in synaptic manager--other software it shows most boxes already ticked even CD-whatever package I Un-tick it but its always there,in effect they are all ticked and I know the top one(CD ****** Package) should be Un-ticked.? Finally another thing i,ve noticed is ,When Typing in peppermint the " is a @ and vice versa on the keyboard as I type it in once booted into peppermint 3.
Any Idea,s?
 regards
Eddie

OK, can you send the output from this command:
Code: [Select]
cat /etc/apt/sources.list; for X in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*; do echo; echo; echo "** $X:"; echo; cat $X; done
(be aware the output will be quite long)

I'm guessing during the install you've selected the US keyboard layout .. and possibly the US update servers.

For the keyboard, go to -

menu>Preferences>Keyboard Layout

In the Left column select "United Kingdom"

In the right column select "English (UK)"

Click the "Apply" button.

Does the " and @ now work properly ?

It means -

a) you're using the wrong update server

and

b) you're sources.list file is somehow missing a load of stuff

Gimme 10 mins and I'll post instructions .. need a nicotine and caffeine fix.

OK, first let's backup the sources.list to your home folder:
Code: [Select]
cp -v /etc/apt/sources.list ~/sources.list.backup

Now open sources.list for editing:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

and make it read:-
Code: [Select]
# deb cdrom:[Peppermint 3 _Three_ - Release i386 (20120423)]/ precise main multiverse restricted universe

SAVE the file, and close gedit.

Now go back to -

menu>Preferences>Software Sources

Does it now say:-

Download from: Server for United Kingdom

if so, close that window, and back in a terminal run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then if that runs without error, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall thunderbird skype

are Thunderbird and Skype now in menu>Internet ?

It's where File manager opens .. but you don't need to know that .. the first command will backup the sources.list to there anyway.
