OK, leave it with me .. I'll bung 12.04 into a VM tomorrow if I get the chance, and see if I can work it out.

You are talking about 12.04 in Gnome Classic ?

[EDIT]

For now, change that back to 24

No, not now as I've switched to just 'Gnome' as the 'Theme' thing works, sorry :-)

Yes please as it would be very helpful for Mrs pooky as she is going blind. I am trying to sort out my PC and her lappy to display things bigger. I'm also goig to look at using the on-screen keyboard and possibly the magnifier (will the compiz stuff work in Gnome, or is it just Unity?)

Can't remember .. I'll look into it .. I do remember it was all an unholy mess in 11.10 though.

Maybe Mint 13/14 with the MATE desktop would be  a better bet ? .. or maybe not .. maybe you could test it on a LiveUSB or VM ?

[EDIT]

Actually I think you can install the MATE desktop on Ubuntu 12.04 from a PPA

[EDIT 2]

Yeh, you can :) .. according to this:-
http://www.noobslab.com/2012/11/install-mate-14-desktop-in-ubuntu.html

You just need to run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://packages.mate-desktop.org/repo/ubuntu precise main"
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mate-archive-keyring
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mate-core
sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment

See the edits above.

MATE is a fork of Gnome 2.x ... so will be like earlier versions of Ubuntu
(like what Gnome "Classic" is trying to emulate .. Gnome 2.x)

Hi pooky

I tried out of curiosity increasing my cursor size also without any luck, but I had a look on gnome-look.org and found a few themes, for some reason they only work inside an application but maybe that can be tweaked, personally i found the first 2 a bit annoying and not something I would use but they might be useful for someone with poor eyesight, the last one is possibly more what you're looking for, no harm in giving it a try

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/BigaThemes?content=155650

or you can try this one, it just puts a semi transparent circle around the cursor, but again it only seems to work in applications

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/yDmz?content=157167

and finally this one, it just gives a large finger pointer, probably more what you're looking for

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Large+Mouse+Cursors?content=140787

If any of the above themes are any use to you it is possible to make them permanent ie to work on desktop and whitespace

Good luck

Graeme

If you can keep your head while all around are losing theirs, then you're not quite grasping the situation

I missed it in all the postings...
I tried it and got...
