So what happens if you run:

unity --reset
?

Also try running:
Code: [Select]
ccsm
and if compizconfig-settings-manager starts .. make sure the "Unity" plugin is enabled.

This isn't a mouse pointer issue though .. is it ?

Really it should have had its own topic with a more descriptive title .. so anyone with a similar problem would be able to find any resolution discovered ;)

You might want to check
unity-panel-service
is running:

Enable it .. then see if the Unity launcher works .. may require you to log off/on again.
