HPLIP upgrade removed duplex option [SOLVED]
« on: April 09, 2013, 04:23:40 pm »
I am running Ubuntu V11.10 on a Dell Latitude D505 laptop and have been using an HP C7200 series printer with a duplex facility.  It has been working well and I find the HP Device Manager very useful.

I upgraded from version 3.13.3 to 3.13.4 just now and find that I can no longer use duplex.
Under "Print Settings/General" double-sided is listed as the default (attached screenshot).
Under "Print settings / Installable options" it says "Duplexer Installed", but the greyed out radio buttons show the default as "off" . (screenshot 2)

Running hp-check in a terminal (attachment) looks OK except for:
a)  Current contents of '/var/lib/hp/hplip.state' file:
Plugins are not installed. Could not access file: No such file or directory
  b)  and another, offline printer

How can I reactivate Duplex?  A web search hasn't helped, and I would be grateful for assistance.

I'm baffled why anyone would mess with a working hplip version ?
(actually I don't understand why anyone would install hplip from the hplip website, unless the version in the repos wasn't recent enough for their printer)

Anywho .. what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep hplip
WARNING: You are logged into reality as 'root'

logging in as 'insane' is the only safe option.

HP Device Manager invited me to do so, so I just pressed the install button that it offered me as having the latest version seemed a good idea.
Here's the output:
dpkg -l | grep hplip
rc  hplip                                  3.11.7-1ubuntu3.1                          HP Linux Printing and Imaging System (HPLIP)

I've no objection to uninstalling it and getting it from the repository.

Is there any need .. ignoring the greyed duplexer thing, is it working properly ?

try running:
Code: [Select]
system-config-printer

then right-click your printer, and select Properties>Installable options

is "Duplexer Installed" listed ?

What happens if you untick it, then click "OK"

What does the HP Printer Manager say now ?

You can always re-tick it.

If you have duplicate printer queues it may be best to delete all printers, then re-add it.

The box was unticked and ticking it worked a treat.
There seems to be a number of useful terminal HP commands - is there a list anywhere that I can peruse and experiment?  I haven't found anything on the web.

Many thanks as usual, Mark.

Ah!  Sorry to trouble you again.
Exploring all the HP Device Manager properties indicates that "(Ink) Supplies information is not available for this device".
Any chance of fixing that?  It's not the end of the world, if not, but it's nice to be able to anticipate low-ink warnings.

Why not use "tab" to autocomplete commands

open a terminal and enter hp now hit the "Tab" key .. you should see a list of commands that start with hp

then you can look up what each one does with:-

man <command>

I can't see anything about hp-levels not working for the C7200 in here:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/release_notes.html

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
hp-levels -p Photosmart_C7200
does it show your levels, or does it error ?

If the printername is incorrect in the above command, you can get the printername with:
Code: [Select]
lpstat -p -d

logging in as 'insane' is the only safe option.

hp-levels -p Photosmart_C7200
Does indeed show the ink levels.  As the commands starts to display text, it includes the statement:
error: Invalid printer name: Photosmart_C7200
but then proceeds to display the levels correctly, which is odd.

lpstat -p -d
printer Photosmart_C7200 is idle.  enabled since Tue 09 Apr 2013 19:19:20 BST
   ready to print
which is the correct printer.
The command "hp+Tab" did not produce any response at all but I shall play around with that one now that I know where the info is.
Many thanks again for your help.

you don't hit h+p+tab

You type

hp

into the terminal, then without hitting enter you hit the "Tab" key .. you should get a list of all commands that start with hp.

Such as -

Code: [Select]
hp-align            hp-levels           hp-query
hp-check            hp-linefeedcal      hp-scan
hp-check-plugin     hp-makecopies       hp-sendfax
hp-clean            hp-makeuri          hp-setup
hp-colorcal         hp-mkuri            hpssd
hp-devicesettings   hp-pkservice        hp-systray
hp-diagnose_plugin  hp-plugin           hp-testpage
hp-fab              hp-plugin-ubuntu    hp-timedate
hp-faxsetup         hp-pqdiag           hp-toolbox
hp-firmware         hp-print            hp-unload
hp-hpdio            hp-printsettings    hp-wificonfig
hp-info             hp-probe

The "Tab" key (in the terminal) autocompletes commands .. but if there's more than 1 it lists them.

Yep; I understood correctly:   type "hp" then hit Tab.  There is no response, but I am sure that it has in the past when I discovered it by accident.
I've just tried it on a desktop running V12.04 and it doesn't work on that, either.
It is not an urgent problem, so if anything occurs to you some time, I would be grateful for ideas.  In the meantime, the list that you provided will be very useful!
Thank you for taking the trouble.

Try with  typing "hp" then hit Tab twice. It works for me on LMDE ;)

Funny you should mention that!
I was just sitting down to tell you that I had discovered it by accident a few seconds ago, when your message appeared!
Very many thanks for your help, Mark - it's much appreciated.
Speaking of which, I have this other problem......  but that will be another post!

Sorry: that was Sezo's advice, wasn't it?  I wasn't paying attention!
Many thanks to you, too.
