Right.  I have re-read this thread and gone through all the terminal commands.  I looked at BKS's post and checked the mass storage box.  For some reason this works over file transfer.  The thing is I never checked file transfer mode over Mass storage it was just an automatic command.  Why this has happened I dont know.  I never had this issue before.  It's strange it works in File transfer mode on Peppermint but stopped working in Mint.

So it is now resolved.  Thanks to everyone who has helped.

OK.  I was a bit excited about it working.  It's not.  The phone now has a check box active for usb mass storage and file transfer that could not be 'checked' before.  I now can check it but nothing happens.  No modem and not recognized in 'Disks'.  DAMN!

Shut down your PC .. turn ON your PC, and immediately hit and hold the "Shift" key until you are presented with the GRUB menu.

In the GRUB menu, use the down arrow key to select "Previous Linux Versions" and hit enter.

In the next menu, select the top option (already selected) and hit enter to boot.

Once booted, post the output from:
Code: [Select]
uname -a
and
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep 3.6.0

You're also selectively answering my questions again ;)

Are you SURE the working Ubuntu version was 12.10 (quantal) and not 12.04 (precise) ?

OK, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-3.6.0-030600 linux-headers-3.6.0-030600-generic linux-image-3.6.0-030600-generic linux-image-extra-3.6.0-030600-generic
(wait for that command to leave you back at an $ prompt)
then reboot normally (without holding shift), and hopefully it will boot into 3.5.0-17 .. you can check this by running:
Code: [Select]
uname -a
again.

If you are at 3.5.0-17 after the normal reboot, do this -

Launch the Mint Updater .. Go to Edit>Preferences .. tick "Safe" and "Visible" for all 5 categories.

Apply, and you should now hopefully be able to see and select the 3.5.0-19 kernel update.

If it DID upgrade the kernel to 3.5.0-19 .. REBOOT.

Check it booted into 3.5.0-19 with:
Code: [Select]
uname -a
again.

If "uname -a" says you're now running 3.5.0-19 .. try your phone now.

Do what you did before .. hold shift etc. and select the 3.5.0-17 kernel to boot into.

if it boots, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub
and post the output.

Done that showed 5 updates for Kernel 3.5.

Still doesn't work and worst still my other phone that did work now won't.

This is a right so and so to fix.
