Have you considered moving back to Ubuntu and installing Cinnamon on that ? ... or maybe another distro, Hmm let me think what would I suggest ..... ;)

is it booting OK now ?

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
uname -a
now ?

Ubuntu 12.10 and Cinnamon I think. Is it easy to do?

I do believe it's supposed to be this easy:

Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon
See here:

and

and many other places on the web.

Thanks Mark.

Installed Ubuntu 12.10 and followed the instructions to install Cinnamon.  I can't get it to load.  I followed the links you posted and still no joy , just Unity.  I have logged in and out, restarted, re- installed etc.

Oh! and just for an extra bit of fun..................my phones are not recognized.    :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(  I don't have much hair left to pull out!

Have you selected "Cinnamon" as the session from the login screen ?

At the login screen, BEFORE entering your password, click the little cog icon .. you should be offered Cinnamon.

The Ubuntu logo then .. the one that's in the same place as the cog was in 11.10 .. the one the freaky little green bird-fish-thingy is pointing at here:-

Are you sure you were running 12.10 when the phone worked before .. there was some confusion as to whether you were running 12.10 or 12.04 IIRC ???

IIRC you can also change the default session somewhere in "System Settings" .. but I'm not sure that's a good idea until it's tested as working OK from the login screen, or how would you (easily) change it back ;)

Don't have the logo either!

OK.  Here is some more important info'.

IMHO there is a hardware failure problem.  My printer that was working fine has now stopped being recognized.  If I plug it into another usb port it will work (sometimes).  I know that my phone works in Peppermint 3 so I live booted Peppermint 3 onto the laptop and it won't recognize it.  Just plugged my phone into my netbook with Peppermint 3 and it works a treat.  I recently asked in another thread for advice on buying a cheap Computer as my laptop seems to be failing.  I now think that that is the case.  Many error messages and peripherals not working properly, overheating and slow performance.

I have a Laptop which has sat unused for a couple of years.  I am now going to upgrade the memory and install Peppermint 3.

Thanks for all the help.

Yes Mark, I was wrong it was 12.04 not 12.10, sorry.

Well, an update. Installed Pepermint 3 on the said knackered laptop and works a treat. Phones recognized straight away. This will keep me going untill I save some pennies up for new kit.
Dont know why it did not work on the live version though.
