Let's try:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-input-evdev xserver-xorg-input-mouse xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
once that's finished .. reboot.

Next up .. if that makes no difference .. going through your log files for clues.

Anyway - done. Will let you know either way after a few days (hopefully nbot before!)
Thanks again for all your help

We've pretty much reinstalled all the input stuff .. dunno if it will make a difference, but I figure "Hey, worth a shot" :)

Fingers crossed.

Spoke too soon!
My manic typing has brought up the cursor jump problem again.
- going all over the place!
Do I need to put that patch in again?

I wouldn't have thought so .. does the touchpad stop working for 1 second during typing ?

Hi Mark

Sorry about the silence, but not been able to get online until today.
- the wires fell out of BT's junction box up the pole near our house (Yes!)
- only rewired six months ago!

Very hard to tell if touchpad stops working. I guess I am just going to have to slow down in my old age

But no more cursor freezes since that last big patch, so here's hoping!

Thanks again for all your help

Mark

Still no cursor freeze since reloading as per your instructions despite running Thunderbird, Firefox and transcribing madly into gedit (Yippee!)

HOWEVER my understanding of cursor leaping has progressed

1. With 1 sec touchpad delay the cursor leapt about all over the place even when typing slowly. Also the contents of my last copy were pasted, and sometimes great chunks of text were deleted.

2. Going to a 3 sec delay there were no errors despite manic typing and transcribing 5 mins of speech. However the 3 secs made moving the cusrsor a tad cumbersome

3. Going to a 2 sec delay seemed to work OK, but then all of a sudden the Thunderbird and gedit icons disappeared from the bottom line of the screen. Opening gedit and the file I was editing I got the message that the file was already open in another gedit window - but I couldn't locate it or access it! Thunderbird I could not open. Task Manager showed gedit and Thunderbird present but not running. I couldn't find out how to get them running, but I did kill them and restart, but lost the gedit text I had enetered since the last save :-(

Does the above offer any clues?

Yeh, you'd switched desktop  .. the apps were still open on the other desktop.

Hit  - Ctrl+Alt+Arrow

Where Arrow is the left or right arrow key, to switch desktop.

Isn't there also a desktop switcher on the bottom panel of Peppermint 3 ? .. can't remember, I'm now on Peppermint 4

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but - Thanks freddie, that made me spit out my coffee  ;D

Clever stuff. I will know next time.
No, there deosn't seem to be an option with Peppermint3
But why all the messing around when I have 1 and 2 sec delays?
I am back to 3 secs

I have no idea, it makes no sense to me .. the touchpad should be OFF when typing .. the amount of delay shouldn't make a difference.

Have you tried running running:
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe -r psmouse
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe psmouse proto-imps
and seeing if that makes a difference ?

also try:
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe -r psmouse
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe psmouse proto-exps

Neither of these will survive a reboot, but if either helps we can make it permanent.

Thanks Mark, but while you were preparing those instructions I had cursor freeze after freeze after freeze...

Running Thunderbird and Firefox, with 4-5 tabs on and opening sites - looking at my BT account, abebooks, amazon BBC News and other sites etc.

Firefox settings are still:
 browser.cache. disk.enable false
 browser.cache. memory.enable true

And to cap it all, restarting after the last freeze, Thunderbird brought in ALL my emails from the server again, but Remove Duplicates sorted that out.

I give up. Is my machine jinxed?

Can I upgrade to Peppermint 4 without losing all my emails and files?
And if so, have you done a tutorial on it? (among the millions of other things you manage to fit into your busy support life!)

Erm, not really .. there is NO (safe) direct "upgrade" path in Peppermint .. the only safe way would be to reinstall .. that said It shouldn't be too difficult to copy off your  thunderbird directory and other files to another drive (USB stick or USB HDD), then copy them back after reinstallling.

And if so, have you done a tutorial on it?

I haven't done a Peppermint 4 tutorial for the AA1 yet, simply because I'm waiting for someone like PendriveLinux to release a LiveUSB creation tool that supports "persistence" on Peppermint 4 .. there are ways around this, such as simply renaming the ISO to Peppermint 3, and in any case persistence isn't required for installation .. so if you wanna give it a shot, I'm willing to help you through it ?

Does your touchpad/cursor fly around if you run Peppermint from a LiveUSB ?

Oops! Didn't get a notification of that post.

Sorry, can't answer that Q at the moment

I Googled: linux cursor freeze
and I see I am not alone.

At the last freeze I pressed Ctrl and it immediately rebooted. I am beginning to wonder if both the cursor freeze and jump could be a keyboard problem?

They certainly *could* be a hardware issue .. mine doesn't do it .. but that doesn't mean much on its own.

It would be interesting to know if it still jumps around when booted to a LiveUSB.

If it originally didn't do it with Peppermint 3, and you boot to a LiveUSB, if it DOES jump around it would tend to indicate hardware, if it doesn't, it would tende towards software.
