Boot to a Peppermint LiveCD/LiveUSB .. set up your wireless connection, so you have internet access.

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo mount /dev/sdb5 /mnt
then
Code: [Select]
for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount -B $i /mnt$i; done
then
Code: [Select]
sudo chroot /mnt
then
Code: [Select]
apt-get install --reinstall x11-common xorg xserver-xorg-core lightdm lightdm-gtk-greeter

Now hit Ctrl+D
(to exit the chroot environment)

Reboot and check if Peppermint (on the HDD) will boot normally.

Sorry Mark but no luck

I don't know what the hell I've done all I remember doing was logging out I never changed or installed anything I'm aware of

I'm happy just to re-install, I've nothing to lose any important stuff is on my NAS, I know you don't like to be beaten Mark and I respect that, but honestly this is not worth the misery were putting ourselves through

But I'll trust your judgement

May be quicker to just reinstall (you probably could have done it ten times over by now).. but your call ?

Run a full system update either from -

menu>System Tools>Software Updater

or with:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

You are welcome (not that I helped much). :)
It would have been (although frustrating) nice if we could have gotten to the bottom of it and found the cause (or at least recovered from it).
Just a simple update should not have caused that severe screw up.

Hi SeZo

I agree it would have been nice to have solved the problem, even nicer to have known what the hell caused it, but there has to be a limit and although I was getting frustrated I felt this was beginning to frustrate you & Mark as well.

There are other people on here that need help and I was getting more than my fair share

Once again thanks for your help & patience

I'm not convinced it was an update that caused it, otherwise it would have gone bonkers again when he updated just ;)

I'm never bothered about trying to solved a problem .. I live for this stuff and hate to be beaten, but there comes a point when you think "okay, I've spent 3 days on the issue, I could have reinstalled a few times by now, is there any point to continuing".

So I agree with you both .. it would have been nice to know, but probably not worth the effort.

But can I add - In any future situations like this, I'm happy to play it any way you'd like :)

Happy to hear it's all up and going again though .. have you done the fstab stuff for mounting the NAS partitions yet ?
