Is that a different OS from the one you were trying earlier ?

if so try again

also make sure you copy and paste the command, do not type it in via the keyboard

then post the output

If you can keep your head while all around are losing theirs, then you're not quite grasping the situation

Bill can you try the this command again

lshw -C multimedia

only this time copy and paste the command into your terminal then press Enter do not type your password or anything else.

this is not a sudo command so a password is not needed to execute it

PCI (sysfs)
after approximately 10 seconds the command should execute and show something like this

Code: [Select]
graeme@Linux1 ~ $ lshw -C multimedia

The computer engineer told me the sound has been disabled because of the noise it was making. I dont know if that makes a difference to what is shown.

Ok we are getting somewhere although it may not look like it

Try this in the terminal remember no password just copy and paste this
Code: [Select]
lshw -C display
hit enter and give it 10 secs or so to execute then post the output

it doesnt look like you put a space between lshw & -C
if you're going to type it in manually type

lshw<space>-C<space>multimedia

ok that worked and it looks like it's the same format as you did with multimedia so it may be possible that it's not showing if your PC engineer disabled the onboard soundcard in the bios but I would need someone to confirm that, if that's the case then it looks like you dont have any other PCI audio cards installed, so you will likely have to wait till your new soundcard arrives.

The reason we were having so much problems is that I suspect you were entering your password after typing in or copying the commands into the terminal you only need to enter your password if the command begins with sudo or su etc and only when prompted

Can you please check you private messages :)

Yes, the sound was disabled because it made a horrible noise like Tesco's food refrigerators
