1) You don't need drivers for an optical drive .. though to play commercial DVD's with CCS encryption, you'll need to run:
Code: [Select]
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

2) not that I know of .. what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C display

keith@keith-K7VT4APro ~ $ sudo lshw -C display
  *-display
       description: VGA compatible controller
       product: NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400]
       vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
       physical id: 0
       bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0
       version: b2
       width: 32 bits

       resources: irq:16 memory:de000000-deffffff memory:d0000000-d7ffffff memory:dfef0000-dfefffff

2 questions,

1. how do I find and install graphic drivers

2. I can't get my cd and dvd drives to open, only in file manager.
When I try to open in vlc nothing happens, any ideas?

If you go to:-

menu > Preferences > Sowftware Updater > Additional Drivers (tab)

is there anything listed ?

And in VLC, go to

Media > Open Disc

What's listed under

Disc Device:

?

I find that VLC defaults /dev/dvd on mine yet if I change it to /dev/sr0 then it works.
You could find out where it is located with this:
Code: [Select]
/usr/sbin/hwinfo --cdrom | grep "Device File"
Then just use that device in the future.
You can change the default device by going:
Tools->Preferences->Show Settings->All->Input/Codecs->Default Devices

I'm not sure there's much you can do about the graphics drivers in peppermint 4

You need the nvidia-96 drivers, and there's currently no such package in Ubuntu 13.04 (so therefore Peppermint 4).

There was one for Ubuntu 12.04 .. so maybe you'd be better off with Peppermint 3

Thanks for the help,

I'll mark this solved, as the original question has been.

I will download peppermint 3 and let you know how I get on, there will no doubt be some more questions :D

UPDATE :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Yes I've installed peppermint 3 and its working very well.

It about 7 attempts to install, everything I tried ,from copying to a cd, then usb with unetbootin and usb creator, the install, at the peppermint welcome box, the box would disappear leaving just the circle going around and around and around.

This was with the iso downloaded from the peppermint home page, then I noticed the iso in your tutorial had a different number
3-20120722 from the home page
3-20121105 from the tutorial

when I tried the 3-20121105 it worked 1st time

all the drivers are there

I did the SeZo solution to getting vlc to work

Shockwave flash wasn't there so I followed your guide on the peppermint forum and that works fine,

So all in all, when I see that blood splattered screen, I get a warm glow and I am very pleased.

So a big thanks.

Keith

Hmm .. you're right, the version on the Peppermint "previous versions" page is the FIRST edition of Peppermint 3, not the later respin (that contained some bug fixes) .. I'll point that out to them.
