then

sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers-3.8.0-31 linux-headers-3.8.0-31-generic linux-image-3.8.0-31-generic linux-image-extra-3.8.0-31-generic
any errors ?

That seems to have gotten rid of the broken dependencies, gone for a re boot and all seems well.
What was the problem?

OK, here's what I *think* happened - first attempt at installing the kernel+headers+extras packages failed with a corrupt "extras" package .. but that meant the headers never got installed.

Subsequent attempts to install just the "extras" package failed because it needs the headers package installing first.

So we told it to REinstall the lot in one go.



It would probably be a good idea to run a system update, in case anything else didn't get installed when dpkg failed on the "extras" package
