Yes .. you need to make sure the "Independent" and "Canonical Partner" repos are enabled.
Menu > Preferences > Software & Updates > Other Software (tab)

then close that dialog

then update the package cache
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update

Then install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
(hint .. Use the Tab key to select OK and YES)

then install both ubuntu-restricted-extras and lubuntu-restricted-extras
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras lubuntu-restricted-extras

Or check out stages 4, 5, and 7 in this tutorial

I hope you enjoy Peppermint :)

Now that you've installed the "extras" packages .. if you're likely to play any commercial DVD's, you might also want to run:
Code: [Select]
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
to enable playback of DVD's that use the CSS content scrambling system.

Pleased to hear that .. always nice to hear it's saved another PC from the bin, and made it enjoyable again.
(not that I'm biased or anything ;))

Thanks for the feedback :)

Until Peppermint 5 is released next may/june(ish) .. can't be more precise than that as there's no fixed release date, iit's released when considered "ready" :)

Peppermint is released annually, so is based on every "other" Ubuntu/Lubuntu release.

Peppermint 5 will "officially" be supported until Peppermint 6 a year later, but as it'll be based on the Ubuntu/Lubuntu 14.04 Long Term Support release it will continue to receive at least security and bugfixes for the full 5 years.

Think of it like this .. the Peppermint specific repository will stop receiving updates when a new version of Peppermint is released, but as 99% of it comes from the Ubuntu repos, you'll get updates for 99% of it in line with the Ubuntu/Lubuntu release it's based on.

And the 1% from the Peppermint specific repo tends to be mainly just configs, artwork, etc.  .. OK, and the Ice application, but nothing that should stop working or is a security risk if it's not updated :)

[EDIT]

As Lubuntu are going fully LTS with 14.04, there's a good chance Peppermint will too .. I don't think it will be too much work (if any) to support the Peppermint specific repo for the full 5 years, not much in there tends to need changes anyway.

Does that include ticking the source tabs  for Independent" and "Canonical Partner......???????

No, you can leave the (Source) items unticked .. or tick them if you wish :)

The full answer is - the (Source) repos are not "necessary", but nor will they hurt anything .. so your call.
