OK, we could easily set the 2.6.38 kernel as the default kernel, but i'd rather find out why it doesn't like the latest one .. gimme an hour or two (tea time) and I'll do a little research and get back to you.

Just keep using the 2.6.38 kernel till then :)

Can you answer these questions ..

Booted into the 2.6.38 kernel .. run:
Code: [Select]
gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and post the contents (if any).

and

Are you able to boot an 11.10 LiveCD to a working desktop ? .. or does that lock up too ?

Still using kernel 2.6.38, what is listed when you go to "Additional Drivers" ?
or run:
Code: [Select]
jockey-gtk

Something else I'd like you to try .. Turn off your PC, then turn it back on and hold the Shift key (or F8 as you have been doing) till you are at the GRUB boot selection screen, now instead of selecting kernel 2.6.38 .. select the second from the top option .. eg. the latest kernels "recovery mode" .. and boot to that, when given the options, use the arrow keys to select "FailsafeX" low graphics mode and hit enter to boot.

Does it boot ?

If so, can you send the output from:
Code: [Select]
uname -a

right i tried the other step, what i got was when i went into the recovery mode i got 4 options

resume - normal boot
fsck
remount
root

stupidly i did fsck it did something then i went to root and put it the uname -a command

what i got back after was Linux winston 3.0.0-16-generic-pae #29 ubuntu SMP tue feb 13:56:31 UTC its not exact as i couldnt copy paste it. it did then list some usb connectors and my optical mouse. i didnt try to resume boot.

also i noticed sometimes the options after going into my boot menu dont come up sometimes. hit and miss.
Im noob so please forgive my ignorence :D :P

How much RAM have you got ? .. I'm wondering why it installed the PAE kernel.

If you're unsure, what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
free

[EDIT]

can you also send the output from:
Code: [Select]
dpkg --list | grep linux-image
and
Code: [Select]
dpkg --list | grep linux-headers

Is the ONLY working kernel the 2.6.38-13 generic one ? .. or is the only broken one 3.0.0-16 ?

What are the contents of grub.cfg:
Code: [Select]
gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg

[EDIT]

And just as a matter of interest, is there any particular reason you're using the 32bit version of Ubuntu rather than the 64bit one ?

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
cat /proc/cpuinfo

And my other question? ..is 2.6.38 the ONLY kernel that works ?

Have you tried the :-
Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-16-generic
kernel

NOT the
Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-16-generic-pae
kernel

I'm in two minds what is the best way forward here .. the problem could be:-

a) a corrupt intrd.img for the 3.0.0-16-generic-pae kernel .. so we could attempt to reinstall that kernel.

b) the graphics drivers and/or Xorg weren't replaced .. so we could try reinstalling those .. what is the output from:
Code: [Select]
Xorg -version

c) some other incompatibilit y between your hardware and the new kernel .. we'll need to go through your log files.

but before we go through all that .. How averse are you to a fresh install, because I reckon you'de be better off with the 64bit version.

At the very least, downloading the 64bit ISO and burning it to a DVD, then test booting the LiveCD it will tell us if it will work.

[EDIT]

Another option would be to try an even newer kernel, such as 3.1 or 3.2 ?

fresh install sounds perfect, im not gonna lie im struggling to follow past basic copy paste commands.
64bit would be better as i would like to upgrade some parts at some point.
i have a few cds that go up 700mb not sure if 64bit would fit on that though, also not sure if burning a dvd on this computer will work as the last 2 cds i burnt never finished properly. and i cant find the options on the burner to take off the checking it does. so maybe ill go buy a dvd and go to internet cafe see if they will let me download the 64bit onto the dvd?
Im noob so please forgive my ignorence :D :P

Checking is unimportant .. by the time it runs the verification, the burn is already complete, so either the disk burned correctly or not.

I have a feeling that 11.10 doesn't fit on a CD any more, and requires a DVD

The ISO image is 697M, so it would be close .. but someone else said they couldn't get it on a CD.

Do you have a USB memory stick, preferably 2GB plus, that you don't mind erasing ? .. we could make a LiveUSB instead of a LiveCD.
