And what do you mean by -

Do you mean "evolution" as text somewhere, or the application interface gets displayed ?

Thanks. I've been busy. My seminal article on the Pres. campaign (written for foreign audience) was published on Yahoo after much idiotic style-sheet editing and it could be a big deal if enough people look at it, please click on it + distribute to your lists:

Try this .. open Startup Applications, select the Options (tab), put a tick in "Automatically remember running applications when logging out".

now close Startup Applications .. and log off, then on again.

Open Startup Applications again, but this time REMOVE the tick from "Automatically remember running applications when logging out".

Log off/on .. does Skype still autostart ?

You didn't explain what you meant by

Can you explain exactly what you're seeing during shutdown ?

Quote
sudo find / -name *kype* (presume you meant Skype, but did it as written)

Nope .. I meant it as written .. so it would return results for both Skype and skype :)

Well, the mail client EVOLUTION, which was closed flashes on the screen with all the messages, as the comp is shutting down. Happens all the time, as if a phantom or duplicate version is running. I capitalized correct choice.

Wonder if it's corrupted. What's a simple way to reinstall the whole thing? It is slow to open, open multiple instances sometimes, and worse seems to be losing messages.

Have you solved the Skype issue ?

Which version of Ubuntu are you running ?

[EDIT]

Ignore that last question .. it's in your first posting .. 10.04.1 64bit

I'm *guessing it has something to do with the way Evolution used to be an integral part of 10.04, and/or the evolution-alarm.desktop file that's getting autostarted ..

Have you considered ditching Evolution in favour of Thunderbird .. be careful, IIRC removing Evolution in 10.04 wasn't a straight forward process, and would take half your desktop with it .. but I'm sure there were tutorials on how to achieve it online.

Thanks. Yes, that solved Skype opening, though I spastically forgot to close app on the top so tried it 4 times. Now did you really need all those outputs for that? The evolution automatically opens 2 data server, alarm, and  notify processes without the program being officially open. No, I don't want to remove it- just prevent it from starting up or rather ensuring complete shutdown before I suspend. Can I stop or end those processes safely before I try sleep? Is reinstalling it complicated or dangerous. You think that start-up check might have any effect on Evolution?

I have Thunderbird, but use it for read-only: initially installed it and downloaded all messages on XP on an XP partition, and I'm afraid any download of messages in Ubuntu would corrupt the 40,000 message stores (since they're Windows formatted). Frankly I was amazed that I could even get it to display all the messages.

No it turns out I didn't need those outputs for Skype (though they may have helped a little with Evolution too), but I had to check it wasn't being autostarted from the regular autostart locations first .. there's no way to diagnose a problem without asking some questions, and how was I supposed to know if I would or wouldn't need them until you responded.

Diagnosing any computer related issue is a logical process that (as I'm not there) requires you answer some questions, if you don't like answering questions .. don't ask for help .. Simple as that.

What would you have me do .. guess ?  ::)

Evolution .. as I've said, Evolution was an integral part of the desktop in 10.04 not just a simple email client, so I'd assume different parts of it will be started from different locations .. and I've heard that removing it incorrectly can screw up your system.

There ARE tutorials online on how to remove it, but I can't verify them .. so that would be up to you .. I don't post any fixes that I suspect may cause other issues, or that I can't verify first.

If you want to try, I can point out that evolution-alarm-notify appears to be being autostarted from:-

~/.config/autostart/evolution-alarm-notify.desktop
and
/etc/xdg/autostart/evolution-alarm-notify.desktop

So whether you want to move those, and see what happens is up to you .. what you do with that info is your choice, and I won't be held responsible .. and I doubt if those are the only places it's being started from.

Thunderbird .. the emails stored by thunderbird are not formatted "differently" for Windows.

If you decide to follow an online tutorial for removing Evolution, and use Thunderbird instead .. I'd advise you backup the Thunderbird mail store first, just to be 100% safe.

I'm not sure what you mean by "start-up check" .. if you mean fsck, I seriously doubt it could cause what you're suggesting , but you're asking me to guess again.

If you want to kill a process .. easiest way would be to use "System Monitor" .. right-click the process, and select kill.

Just teasing- course you need info to make diagnoses. So closing the evolution  processes wouldn't hurt before suspend? Never even used alarm, but seems useful.

You sure about Tbird? A Windows installation on a a FAT32 disk wouldn't be corrupted by having an Ubuntu installation try to save messages on the same stores? That's what I'm talking about and I've been very careful to NOT download messages fm Ubuntu cause I have 35,000 in the stores and it would be a pain to mess them up (though backed up). I was just happy to access them, and after I transfered 5K online sent messages to inbox, downloaded into TB, and then to a folder (can't transfer into sent folder, or download from it), then they all got mysteriously erased except first page. Do you have any contact for Yahoo customer service, or mail CS (used to be yahoo-inc, but that doesn't work anymore); I want to beg them to restore them from their server backups. Actually don't know why I can download- had Yahoo Plus ($25) for a year, and they never shut it off, or can anyone do it with regular free acct? I know you can do it if you claim your home region is ASIA, which I did with another acct.

Meant startup checkmark you had me check + uncheck. Who knows- that might fix flashing, esp. if some other process was autostarting by that process. Know any Nokia (older) phone manager/modem program for Ubuntu?

A couple of years ago IIRC, I set up a system that was reading and writing emails recieved by Tbird to the Windows partition .. but that was a while ago, so I can't be 100% sure it would still work.

Personally, I'd set Tbird in Linux to download emails to the Linux partition, but to leave messages on the server when it downloads .. that way they'd be picked up again by the Windows copy of Tbird before being erased from the server. (in other words, only the Windows copy of Tbird would erase them from the mail server)

Sorry,  can't help with Yahoo .. maybe this:

which has a customer services number about a quarter way down the page.

Is Evolution listed (and ticked) in "Startup Applications" ?

I can't see that terminating evolution processes prior to going into standby would hurt  anything .. give it a whirl.

Have no space for dup Ubuntu mail- need a 2nd bigger HD - got biggest comp store had in Nov 2008, which was 160gb - took me 2 years before I got around to figuring out how to copy it all over properly. Then I filled it up in short order. Now a 500gb drive is $50, but this old piece of junk isn't worth too many more upgrades. One thing lack of space does is force you to clean out jnk alot.

Thanks for Nokia program, but Windows version (which didn't work) is 40gb- what other files do I need for that installation (main prog is only 512K).

Suspend working for the moment, have no idea if I should undo all the redundant quirks or quarks.

If I understand that question correctly .. when you double-click the .deb file, any dependencies it needs will be downloaded from the repos and installed for you.

Windows applications are usually much larger than Linux versions because the installer (.exe) come with all necessary dependencies rolled in .. somewhat wasteful if they are already present on your system.

Thouugh I *am* a bit baffled by "Windows version" .. which Windows version ?

80x bigger. Nokia PC Suite.eng.us-web.exe   Every company provides Windows programs, then maybe 30-40% will have some Linux program, usually without specifying if it will even work in Ubuntu. There is another newer Windows program- Nokia Suite at 87megs, but I think it's for newer phones- they want 2 gigs of free space!

Including dependencies the Linux one may not be much smaller .. but it doesn't come with them .. as I said Windows installers (usually) include all the dependencies rolled in (think .dll's), some of these .dll's will already be on your system but you have to download them every time anyway.

The Linux model (.deb and .rpm packaged applications) only supplies the application, and a list of dependencies .. then the package manager looks to see if those dependencies are already installed on your system and only retrieves the ones that aren't.

Not entirely true, there are a few companies that do Linux only software, there are more that do Mac only software .. but I think the magic word here is "companies" .. if they're a commercial software house, there's more money in Windows software where people are pre-inclined to expect to have to pay, there's a larger target market, and you can keep forcing new versions down their throats without them asking why.

In general, I prefer to think software developed by a collaboration of individuals who do it for the love of doing it is better placed to support MY needs than software developed by a handful of paid developers who are under pressure to keep bringing in large wads of cash for the company .. that model predisposes them to keep bringing out unnecessary changes (usually loosely termed "features") to keep you upgrading, and to use proprietary formats (that they keep changing) to tie you to their product so you have no choice but to keep upgrading, even when you don't want the new so called features.

I would rather have FOSS software that lives or dies on merit alone, isn't pre-disposed to vendor lock in, and attempts to fix what is reported as broken rather than just rushing out new "features" .. then hopefully the devs can find another way of making money from it, support maybe ?, donations from individuals and companies that see a benefit to keeping the software going, or maybe just reputation so they can get work in the Windows/Mac/Android world.

Yeah sure. I had a great anti-MS commentary when they bought Hotmail but deleted it when was trying to get a job with some affiliate (lived in Seattle). Here's a letter
from AG prosecuting them but must access from Tripod http://tomhammers.tripod.com/menu.htm#letter.

LISTEN- do you think it affects these horrible write delays (30-50 seconds) to get a Class 10 SD card for the extended AAO memory???  Or would a Class 4 do (have an 8gb, and increasing to 16gb)?
Do interminable write delays have anything to do with that extended memory, when they are entirely happening on the SSD chip??

If you're getting extended delays on a standard AA1 AOA110L with 8GB SSD, where the SDD light stays on solidly for a few seconds, and you can't do anything other than move the mouse cursor.

That's most likely caused by a slowly failing SSD, and I doubt if any SD card would help

can you describe the symptoms better, and which AA1 you have ?

Which OS ?

How much RAM ?

etc.
