After recording your sounds on Audacity, click on "Effects" on the menu bar and look for "Click removal" and "Noise reduction". 
They are not perfect, but help a lot although the noise reduction process needs a bit of experimenting to find the best result.  You won't be able to remove the crackle (if at all) without losing the clicks, too
As for clarity of vocals:  probably not much you can do about that.

Thanks very much Keith. Well it's the background noise that's overlaying the clarity of the singing on the record so removing that may make a difference. I'll try that in a couple of days and report back how I did!

No because it has no CD drive, nor can you use external CD/DVD drives on it. I forgot to look again at the netbook. My friend Dave was doing some CDs for me on his Windows computer and using media player but last time I saw him he was having trouble with it ( probably needed an update ).

I've since bought a GPO Chesterton record player that looks a bit like an old radio and the usb stick works on that so I've been using it to play the mp3s on.

You can record off devices on it  but I don't think it does mp3s to CDS- not figured that out yet. It can play vinyl records, CDs, cassettes and mp3s off a data stick.

Hi guys, I've used Audacity  many times to convert mp4s with music to mp3s or mp3s to wav. but nothing else. I have some mp3s of 1930s music obviously recorded on shellac. Mostly the small pops and crackles I love and don't spoil the recording  but I've a few that have a lot of crackle and the vocals are not as clear as I'd like. I've read you can clean up the audio in Audacity but no idea how to do that. Do any of you know how to do this please?

Sorry guys, I have a new Chromebook ( refurbished one off Ebay so new to me) which is my main laptop now ( it has an SSD drive so is very fast!) so not been using my Linux netbook that much lately ( use it mostly for scanning pix). I'll power it up tomorrow and try and see if I can get Brasero on it using your instructions.

Since Peppermint is Ubuntu-based I am fairly confident that it will work OK.

Guys I have tons of mp3 music files that I wanted to play on a retro radio that plays MP3s. I bought it second hand off ebay but my data stick won't play on it. The data stick is not faulty- it plays perfectly on my netbook.

The seller told me her data stick worked on it fine.

It plays CDs fine and it also has a working radio.

Have you any idea why my data stick does not play on it?

Guys there's no CD ripping software anywhere on my netbook. This includes both the software manager and the package managers!

I'm on Peppermint 9 distro. Brasero or Asunder should be there but they are not.

I'm right frustrated! I am dying to rip some CDS.
