Linux Support / Why is SAMBA so bad
April 15, 2022, 01:36:30 PM
I love LINUX and have been using mint and peppermint for around 10 years.

Yet LAN connections are always a problem with SAMBA........ my main Box is using mint 19.3 and I am testing mint 20.3 on a laptop but mint 19.3 can not open shares on the mint 20.3 system.

My wife's win 10 laptop also connected to the LAN and mint boxes can not open shares on win 10 but win 10 can open shares on mint boxes.

Really wish there was a Linux package that handled LAN shares properly.

This must put off windows users from changing to LINUX.
Using mint 19.3 mate.
Have not used the wifi adapter for some time but needed to use the computer away from a cable point.

The USB can see the networks and attempts to connect but the log-in box dose not appear then it times out.
When I check the connections they are grayed out and no alterations are possible.

I booted from a mint 19.3 live USB and the wifi is working normally. noted what software packages were installed on the live USB and checked on my installed mint 19.3 and they seem to be the same.

Any suggestions.

Note - just tried my mobile data USB and that works just fine so it is only a wifi problem.
Hi something strange.

Set up shares on my peppermint laptop with anyone can access.

Can see the shares from my mint 19.3 desktop but when I try to access from the desktop a password is requested.

I tried entering the user name and password for the laptop and for the desktop but can not login.

In the other direction on problems accessing shares on the mint system from peppermint.

Any suggestions would be welcome.
Mint 19.3 64bit mate.

I installed this wi-fi adapter and all seemed OK indicator light working and can see the different wi-fi networks.

However, it will not log in to any networks box comes up for password but will not connect.

Any suggestions.
Running mint 19.3 cinnamon (this is an upgrade from 18.3).

As I was having issues launching a game I thought I would try a different graphics driver (340) as listed in the driver manager.

The change was not allowed and when I tried to return to the recommended 390 driver I was told that the following dependences were not on the system.

Depends: libnvidia-gl-390 but it is not installed
nvidia-driver-390 : Depends: libnvidia-gl-390 (= 390.138-0ubuntu0.18.04.1)

I have tried repairing them through the "Package manager" I am told they can not be installed.
I tried installing them through apt and I am told there is a conflict with the 340 driver.
Also tried install the 390 driver package from Nvidia.

Any clues please how I can restore the dependencies.

Thank you.
Linux Support / Looking for new email client
May 04, 2020, 03:50:22 PM
Using mint 18.3 64 bit.

For many years I have been using Thunderbird for my email and lighting for my calender.  There wer lots of good add-ons for highlighting and translating  emails.

Since version 60 there have been lots of issues so I rolled back to version  52 with the help of a previous topic.

But still the add-ons are not working.

So have been looking for a new email client but can not find a multi-platform system with the same apps ( spell check, calender, highlighter and translator) any one got any recommendations?

or know how to get the add-ons working in Thunderbird?
Linux Support / Laptop freezes or restarts
February 15, 2020, 11:49:29 AM
Samsung R60 plus running mint 18.3 64bit.

The computer freezes or restarts only when running slide shows of photos stored both on the computer or the LAN.

The system is not overheating and I ran 8 hours of memory tests no problems found.
HDD tests found no problems.

I have tried a different program with the same results.

CPU is at 30% and RAM at 25% when the slide show is running.

Any thoughts what could be wrong.

Thanks in advance.
I am using Mint 18.3 64bit

I updated my LibreOffice to - LibreOffice_6.2.5_Linux_x86-64

Every time I open the program I am told there is an up date available.

I would like for the up dates to take place automagically is that possible?

Any help appreciated.
Peppermint 8 64bit SAMSUNG R60 plus

Sometimes the computer will just freeze.   Keyboard and mouse stop working but screen and rest of system seems OK.

Tested RAM and HD and file system all show as OK Temp also OK.

So anyone have any clues why it should just freeze?

This can even happen when system is idle just showing the desktop with CPU at just 5% use.

Peppermint 8 64bit on SAMSUNG R60 plus laptop.

problem happens when selecting shutdown or reboot.

All starts well the progress bar is moving then it stops about 1/3 of the way and just gets stuck after 10 mins I just have to switch it off.

This previously happened in October 2017 the  keyboard is also frozen and so hitting Esc has no effect.

In 2017 the problem cleared up on its own after running sudo apt-update. (this has not worked this time).

I tried a Live USB of Peppermint 8 - 9 and 10 but the same problem occurs.

Previously I was asked for the following info:

Running mint 18.3 64bit

I did a clean installation and now this box is on a different LAN to all other devices.

This computer is on WORKGROUP   everything else is on 000D0B6DA3C4

How can I change the name of the workgroup on this computer to 000D0B6DA3C4
Running mint 18.3 64bit system.

I connect via a cable LAN to the internet.

The LAN is working just fine can connect to all equipment on the LAN.

But CAN NOT connect to the internet.  Anything that needs to connect to the internet is not working.

Also tried via Wi-Fi and get connected to the modem but no connection to the internet.

Tried using a Live USB of mint 18.3 and everything works just fine.
I am using mint 18.3  I have Libre Office installed.

A friend told me that there is now a version 6 of Libre Office.  I was wondering why my version is not being upgraded.

Is it possible to install the newer version directly?

Thank you for your comments in advance.
Mint 18.3 cinnamon 64bit - I upgraded from version 18.2 and when I booted this morning "Sticky Notes" failed to start.

I was asked to check if I had the latest version which I do only updated this month. https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/194

No one had reported the same problem with mint18.3 with this taskbar app.

I was also told to check the system log but I can not find it.

Any help would be appreciated.
Peppermint 8 64bit

As I have done a clean install and I can not find the setting to place the Home, Computer, Trash and Network icons on the desk top.

I had them before............  I tried looking under file settings no joy.

Help please.
I am using peppermint 8 64bit

We previously installed this wifi adapter and it was working fine.

I have not used the wifi for around 8 months but need to use it this coming week so plugged it in and the adapter  was not seen by the system.

There have been 2 Kernel updates since it was installed and just to see I booted using the original Kernel and the adapter was working OK again.
How do I make it work with the new Kernel or do I need to remove the new kernels and if so how do I remove them or force the system to boot from the original.

As always any help would be appreciated.
Running mint 18.2 64bit cinnamon

Some years ago I got instruction on this forum how to install a 32bit version of wine on my 64bit system.

The wine version has been fixed since that time.

Now to install a new version of MS office I need to install a newer version of wine.

How do I install a newer version whilst keeping it the 32bit version of wine?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.
We are looking for a software package that works with Linux (also windows would be an advantage).

We want to set up a platform with a number of subject rooms up to 20. User security is of importance as is the look of the finished site.

We need something that looks as if it is modern and we are willing to pay a small fee for the right software.

Any suggestions or recommendations welcome.

Thank you.
Linux Support / Presentation freezes

SAMSUNG R60plus using a recent version of Peppermint 64bit.

I use this computer to display a revolving photographic selection around 200 photos.

After about an hour of operation it freezes on one photo and all keys on the keyboard and the mouse are also frozen.

The only option is to restart I have tried using both the software options that come with Peppermint.

Any suggestion please.

Today it ran for 2hours using a different software for the slideshow then it again just froze.  I was checking the GPU temp and it was normal the system just stops responding.

Anyone have any thoughts.
I am using mint 18.3 64bit.

Thunderbird was updated and all my add-ons stopped working.  I need to return to a version where the add-ons were working.

I have downloaded the zip file for Thunderbird 52.9.1 known to work with my add-ons.

How do I install  the downloaded file.

Thanks in advance.
