Any idea what Oporating system it is?

Without using command lines, it usually says on the screen when turning on.

(Can I take the libery of assuming you're not an expert with copmuters?)

EDIT: "purple-ish evening surrounding" makes me think of Ubuntu 10.4 (the new one that was released a fwe days ago) but I've never heard anything about rabbits being involved . . .

Oh god yes, just as I finished ranting about having to use win7 when half my stuff is kept on my linux partition, this comes up.

Guys, you've made this night a good one for me.

When I log into Steam, using Steam, I log into everything about my acount, much more than just a chat client.
My games, community details, friends list, game stats and much more all becomes "active", for lack of a better word, when I loggin to enforce all sorts of licensing agreements (one game at a time, one client running at a time, each acount only logged into on one computer at a time, etc) concerning the games.

So I doubt a chat client would be able to log into my acount just to access my friends list and groups. But then I've never really thought about it, I just heard about wine and saw it as a way to use Steam chat in linux. If its possible, I'm all ears.
Though, its a problem if . . . whatever chat client I've been using can only log into one acount at a time, as Steam acounts have nothing to do with email other than a way to verify acounts and purcases and I tend to be signed into my Skype, Steam and Yahoo acounts at the same time most of the time.

I'll have a try when I'm not busy with pratice exams.

EDIT: I've searched around, and there is no standalone Steam chat client, nor does any major chat client support it. I think its like trying to get a client to talk to facebook chat. :/

And now, wine updated this morning, and now Steam crashes my Gnome session, or whatever the phrase is. I run Steam.exe, a windows saying "Connecting to Steam account Smith5er . . ." as usual, then once that finishes, the screen flicks to the login page, and all my windows have gone when I login again. :/

Time to reinstall an older version of wine . . .

Steam is not a game, it's primarily a publishing client.

You can browse the store, and buy games from the store, many small devlopers use it to publish their games.
The only direct relevance it has to games is it needs to be running to play any steam game.
But most improtant thing about it to me, is that it comes with an IM chat client, which I use a lot.

It ran almost perfectly with the old IE-based UI, but now the new one's official, everything runs very slowly.
It works, its just takes 5 seconds to do anything (change windows, type, send a message, change tabs).

But I think I'm wasting my breath here, I'll go ask the steam forums & the ubuntu wiki for help on these points.

The new steam client that's based on safari & chrome, or summin, came out of beta today, and now everyone has it.
For some people it works fine, but for others, it barely even runs in XP.
For me, its almost unbearable with wine, I'm in 7 atm, and its ok, but in linux, its just soo laggy.
I'm starting to wander if its worth risking a regression or two, or even breaking it entirely again, and update wine . . .

Also, hot damn working with audio settings in Linux is confusing, frustrating and an all-round pain in the rear! Dx
I just can't get my head around what everything means, what changes what and how I go about implimenting different configurations.
I think I deduce what a button or slider does, or what a particluar setting changes, but then 10 minutes later its seems to be doing something different, or I need to change something else before I get the new setting to take effect.

Any tips on either problems?

My own 404 help topic is 404'ing on me.

Uh, thanks. It's worked without any settings changed by recording everything with the one mic, I just wanted to try and separate the keyboard and my voice. I hate to say this, but I used windows for that evening, the driver has a setting to separate all jacks, then set a "default device" for every type of jack (in/out/mic) and then skype and steam have the option of selecting whether they use the default or alt jack. And Jack is just super confusing. @[email protected]

The new home page only seems to display a few new posts, not every, and it doesn't seem to display new topics, so I can't deduce what its for.

Now, simple question: How do you get sound coming in to be immediately played back through speakers?

I know its possible because I've just done it in win7.
I have a keyboard and I want be able to let some friends hear it, but up until now I've just been raising the volume of the keyboard, plugging my headset into the microphone jack, and letting the microphone record the keyboard's speakers. Not ideal, as you'd agree.

OK, new plan.
I have a headset (stereo mic with stereo headphones), two speakers, and a keyboard with an output jack.
My computer has the usual green out and pink mic in the front and green out, blue in and pink mic at the back.
It has a 5.1 onboard soundcard and a digital out, though that's less important.

I have some friends on Steam that I'd like to be able to play my keyboard to (the quality is terrible so we use text to communicate) and I have some other friends in Skype that want to call me. Is it possible to let my stream friends hear only my piano and let my skype friends hear only me voice through my mic?
I also need to hear the keyboard, and as plugging a jack in the output silences it's speakers, need whatever mic or in jack its connected to to be played straight back through my speakers. Whether the keyboard's sound and the skype pone call mix in for my output doesn't matter.

Anyway, when you get the time, click the applications bar and select "Add/Remove Applications" and shop away to your hearts content for all the software you'll ever want for free. Try it when you have some free time, its lots of fun.

Except professional CAD software and quite a few games, that's a different case . . .

OK, well all the Steam windows "follow" me.
As in, I start them up on desktop 3, and a switch back to desktop 1, where firefox is, and all the steam windows move to desktop 1, but are still at desktop 3's position. So I can select, minimize, maximize and close the windows, but they don't appear onscreen for desktops 1 or 2, only on 3.

Also making links doesn't work. I like to log into Steam and join my group's chat as soon as I boot up, but I have to wade through my C folder to get there atm, and making links to the C:/Program Files (86)/Steam/ folder and to the Steam.exe file in it don't work when I click them.

And the sound thing is just glitches. Starting the program again, or going full screen for a sec (if it doesn't crash anything vital) solves the problem. I can live with it.

Wait, but I just updated my whole system and had no problems, how could I be getting 404's from (presumably) the same place?

Meh, I don't care because IT WORKS!!

Well, sometimes the Touhou games crash on the loading screen, on don't play sound, or are kinda laggy (eventhough the display in the games says 60fps), and they crashed my File browser and even my Gnome session once, but that was happening before.

Even Steam's working!
Well, I'm logged in, but it takes forever to load and the community pages are taking even longer to load.
But I just got the chat to work, so I don't care!

(btw, this is all by going to my Win7 partition and double clicking on the .exe files directly)

EDIT: Just tried adding to the software sources and it didn't work.
But that's ok, I think I'll leave wine as it is now, I don't want to suffer a regression and have to go through with this again.

Well it worked like that before.

I still don't have a .wine folder in my home folder.

I went back to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Touhou Games\ and tried a couple of them, english and japanese versions, and selected Open with Other application... and I tried everything beginning with W:

and even typing "wine" as a custom comand, but they all gave the message:
Could not find application.
Could not find wine.

EDIT: Downloaded that .deb file and holy crap, it works!
Well, one of the Touhou games starts up and shows the loading screen.

No, sorry, the dll's have nothing to do with it.
There are 6 games from the "Touhou" series that I like to play, and some of the more recent ones need some dll's put in their folders to run, even in Windows, but I've just tried to play one of the earlier ones, which works "out of the box" (or rar file here) in both Windows and Linux, but I wasn't even given a choice to use wine, it just opened with the Archive manager.

tl;dr Wine is still not properly installed on my computer. Not after you're commands, not after the recommendations I was given by the terminal after your commands had finnished.
