Hi Folks, as the title says - have removed all two add-ons, and cleared the cache as recommended on both the ubuntu, M$, and Mozilla forums, and yet it still no worky 

I'm drugged up on Tramadol at the mo, so any help much appreciated

Hi Folks, So, here's a new one on me.... neither SPM nor Software manager are working....

SPM, having asked for, and received my pwd,  gives the following errors:-

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_trusty_main_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Sotware manager asks for my pwd, and is given it, and then closes the window (!!)

We've had this printer for ages, and had it in the network before, accesible from laptop and desktop, but its stopped working.

I'm guessingthat this may be a change of ISP, and the "new" router, but given we have an HP3392 all in one which just works, I am a bit lost as to what has happenned.

I've used ifconfig to find the gateway and subnet mask, assigned a fixed IP to the printer, but can't get it to work on the net. USB still works fine, but, obviously this isn't as convenient..

Could anyone walk me through this please?

So, i had been running dual monitors for a while under Ubuntu Gnome 14.04, and then switched to P6. I'm also running this on my laptop, so it makes things easier, with my poor eyesight, and in the tramadol induced haze that I seem to be in.

So, I installed ARandR, and long story short it works, almost perfectly.. 2 issues remain and I can't seem to get my head round either

1) Despite saving the (config) file from the ARandR GUI, there is no persistence, not even across logout and login.. I guess I am doing something wrong !

2) monitor 1 has the entire desktop space on it - scrolling to the RHS of the screen causes the screen to roll to the right, and then the 2nd monitor just shows the same as the first... which makes the 2nd monitor a bit pointless. thus, if its possible, I could do with some help sorting this out please.

The hardware is the same as worked under 14.04. I've forgotten how to identify  same but the extra graphics card is an Nvidia geforce 210, with the monitor connected by DVI at 1920 X 1080. primary monitor is running off the (Zoostorm i7 ) internal graphics at the same res., also connected by DVI.

Hi Folks,

Due my disability, I have two issues with FF43. I have tried to live with this for a while, but I can't be bothered with it (!), and I hope someone can help re-configure it!

1) within the navigation bar, the icon which gives access to the list of most recently visited websites only appears when one places the cursor in proximity to said icon - thing is, if your fine motor control is an issue, and you can't see too well either, then "one" needs this icon visible all the time so "one" can navigate to it directly, in a single movement, NOT in several movements.

Does anyone know if there is a way to do this please?

( we could also loose the reader view icon out of the nav bar, at least for the time being )

2) In the top right corner of a tab title, the close tab "x" is too small, and I wonder if there is a way to make it bigger?

As the thread title, but the really weird part, is that when I booted from a USB stick, to see if it would work with the phone, it did !!, and now having installed it, it does not.

What actually happens is that the directory structure appears in file manager, but if one tries to copy, then the process either hangs, or eventually generates an error message with "unable to get object handles"

The actual error message is:- "Sorry, could not display all the contents of "Card": libmtp error:  could not get object handles."

I suspect that I have done something silly, but would be grateful of some help !!

Well, following my other thread on the choice of laptops, we finally took the expensive plunge of getting a NP700. 

And.... since I can't get on with unity,   I have just installed P6 on it,  having replaced one of the HDD's with an SSD*.

was an easy install, which i will detail once I finished tweaking, but it  all appears to work properly ( for now !! )

* had to buy a new SSD, as the "old" out of the old HP has some evolution data on it that I couldn't migrate to the current version of evo, so I took the decision to run this SSD on an old machine ( when I get round to it ), and then put it in the laptop to replace the current second HDD.

gonna get my printers installed in a bit,and then restore most of my data to this ssd... (yawn)......

(Yes, it has definitely cost too much, but if we look after it, it should last as long as the old HP did.... here's hoping anyway!)

Hi Folks,

So, I need a new laptop. Old HP G70 is dead - suspected mb failure, and thus probably not economic to fix.

Three main issues for me:-

1) Must have a large screen - 17.3" or larger ( poor eyesight due disability ) ( seems to take refurbs or second hand out of the equation )

2) Must have a proper keyboard, NOT a chiclet style "thing" ( poor fine motor control due disability (!) )

3) Must run linux (!!) - the HP was running Ubuntu 10:04 LTS without issue. I presume, to avoid unity, I will have to change to another flavour, probably Peppermint6.

For the avoidance of doubt, (sorry, but...) the above are not negotiable.

Point 1 doesn't seem to be too much of an issue - but point 2 is a major PITA because every laptop we have looked at, bar the expensive Dell Precisions have a chiclet.

I would be grateful for any assistance - many thanks in advance.

Well then, the PSU in my old Emachines 6300 desktop finally let the smoke out - 7 years in, so I can't really complain too much!

So, I bought a new Zoostorm Core i7-4790 with 12Gb RAM, and plonked a samsung SSD in it. Installed Ubuntu 14.04, and .... well I have a question !

I would like to run two (DVI?) monitors off this, and as per the thread title would be grateful if someone could recommend a reasonably priced graphics to do so. BTW, current monitor is a 23" Samsung on DVI, and I thought, given the price, another one of these would be sensible....

Hi Folks, Right then, long story short.. I need to backup my laptop (HP G70, running 12.04), and my "normal" backup device, (Seagate 2TB external USB) is being a fool (!) - its clicking and is often unavailable - as in it mounts ok, and then just disappears!

So, given that there is a bit of time pressure involved, and I will be passing near a Maplin and PCWorld and John Lewis on sunday, I am thinking I will just buy a new one, and sort the other out at a later date...

I am after minimum 1TB, and obviously linux compatible, (I.E. no automatic windoze rubbish).

Any one bought anything recently they could recommend, please?

Hi All, so,after Keith's posts about moving to Peppermint 3 with an older laptop, I have the following question:-

First, a little background info....

I have an HP G70. 3 Gb memory, 120Gb HDD, Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU T5800 @ 2.00GHz × 2, currently running Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit with Linux 3.2.0-51-generic & GNOME 3.4.2  (!)

For a little while, it has been running slowly (after an update?), and also frequently fails to resume, in that it "freezes". During "testing" (!), this appears to be related to high processor load at resume, and the machine will eventually return to the land of the living, if left for several minutes. Quicker to hard boot!

So, my question.. would peppermint solve the problems, given the age of the machine, and the cut down nature of peppermint?

Software wise, I would need the following to work:-

1) Libre office and calc
2) GIMP
3) gedit
4) Calculator
5) a web browser

Desktop wise, I am most familiar with gnome, and would like to stick with it.

Hi Folks, I'm after a bit of advice on which Wireless Access point anyone might recommend for (hard) connection to a BT HH3, 30M away? A quick google about shows up all sorts of prices, anything from £20 to several hundred quid!! On the basis that you usually only get what you pay for, how much do I need to spend to get something sensible? Its really only for a home network, but I might as well stick with decent kit, as the rest of the IT here is, er, "decent" (!!).

For example, I have seen the Tenda W308R 300Mbps Wireless N Router 4 Port Access Point for around the £20 mark, and the likes of the Cisco Linksys WAP4410N 802.11n Wireless-N Access Point for around £110.......

Any specific recommendations from personal experience would be great!

HI Folks. I'm having some problems with network printing in that niether of our printers will work over the (home) network - this seems to have started just before the "upgrade" from 10.04LTS to 12.04, which was done to try and get rid of the problem, but didn't (!).  Our Dell 5100 works fine when connected via USB, but, whilst it can be seen on the network, we get a "can't connect to device" when trying to print. Our other printer is a new brother MFC-j5910DW, which we bought for A3 printing, but this has the same problem.

Our network is based around a BT home hub 3, wired to a Emachines desktop, and (separately) to the Dell. We also have an HP G70 connected wirelessly, and have tried the brother connected every way possible with no joy!!

I thought I knew enough to solve this, but obviously I don't !!, so if anyone can help, that would be brilliant, as I'm getting a tad fed up with 12.04, and am contemplating going back to 10.04, even though this is a major pain in the you know where!
