Title: [SOLVED] Xscreensaver Daemon not working
Post by: pooky2483 on August 03, 2012, 12:01:18 pm
I just upgraded to 12.04 and installed Xscreensaver but it seems I have something missing as it doesn't start properly.
It said something about Daemon not starting properly!
Is there a way I can stop it and restart it so I can create the error so I can post it up here without having ro reboot to create it?

I managed to re-create the error without rebooting.

Well you haven't mounted the 500GB drive as /home (but with the current setup that's probably a good thing) .. but I'm still baffled why it won't let you rename a directory in your home directory.

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
mkdir -v ~/test
and
Code: [Select]
ls -ln ~/.xscreensaver
and
Code: [Select]
mv -v ~/.thunderbird ~/.thunderbird-old

All in all .. you've ended up with a mighty weird setup here ???

You're posting multiple problems at the same time which is getting confusing .. so I'm going to respond to the one at a time.

What happens if you run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge xscreensaver xscreensaver-data
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install xscreensaver xscreensaver-data

Then reboot .. does xscreensaver work now ?

Is gnome-screensaver listed in your startup applications ?

Yes, it is. Should it not be?

gnome-screensaver interferes with xscreensaver

You can either stop it from loading by disabling it in startup applicactions .. then add xscreensaver to startup applicatons

or uninstall it, and add xscreensaver to startup applications.

Be aware xscreensaver must be installed BEFORE uninstalling gnome-screensaver.

Installed ok, well - seems ok, no error popped up.
Should I have both screensavers in here...

If xscreensaver is now working because you uninstalled gnome-screensaver .. leave it as is.
(that entry in startup applications could probably be removed, but it won't hurt to leave it either .. untick it if you want)

Oh, and if you consider the topic solved.....
