Long shot. Can anyone give me any pointers on dismantling an old Maxtor Onetouch (external USB drive).
Two screws allow removal of the plate on one end, but there's nothing under it to allow any further access.
A key word is teardown.

I'd put a flat blade screwdriver everywhere BUT the oval hole, used force, twisted, cursed, etc, without success. I only gave up because the force was threatening to wreck the screwdriver.
So simple when you know how...
