Title: Grub won't install
Post by: Smokin Joe on August 27, 2018, 12:34:21 pm
Hi all,

Complete would be beginner here. I'm attempting to install Mint on a five year old Compaq laptop that came with Win 8.1. since upgraded to W10. I just cannot get Grub to load from the DVD, every time I try to install it gets so far then I just get an error message telling me that Grub installation has failed. I've disabled secure boot and Mint will run live from the disk ok.

Any suggestions how to get round this, or is my Compaq just not compatible with Mint? Or maybe another Linux would be more suitable.

Did the OS install (just not GRUB) ?

Are you able to boot to the LiveDVD/LiveUSB ?

If so, can you boot into the LiveDVD/LiveUSB, then open a terminal and post the output from these commends
Code: [Select]
sudo fdisk -l
and
Code: [Select]
sudo blkid

The OS installs quite happily, asking me for my Wi Fi password and a Linux password. It continues a fair way through till an error box pops up telling me that the grub installation has failed, but no other information.

The disk will run live without installing.
