You once showed me a really cool scp | tar command that keeps perms safe with scp transfers of large quantities of flles... could you post it, I've forgotten :/

Erm, you might need to be a little more specific .. what is it you're trying to do ?

.. the only one that springs to mind, to copy a complete system onto a mounted partition;
