Thank you Mark
Yes my mistake Install/Try is correct. To install it asks for user name and password to login and whatever I enter it replies with login or password incorrect so can't get any further. I will try out what you have suggested.
Eventually I only want to run Ubuntu and get rid of Windows, would it be advisable to re format the hardrive and still boot and install from the disc.

So a few years have passed since I was here. I have an old Acer laptop Aspire 5536 and just loaded up an Ubuntu demo/installer dvd which loads up fine and gives me the option to demo/install or manual. I select demo install and everything is fine up to a request for my user name and password? Neither of which I have. So what username and password is it asking for! Can any body help me with this please.

I'll go for what ever is the easiest option as long as I don't create any problems on Windows. I had nothing on Ubuntu that I needed to keep, so no great loss to re install. Cheers

I down loaded Ubuntu and transfered it to disc and used LiLi (Linux Live) USB creator. My Laptop is an ageing ACER ASPIRE 5536 running Windows 7

That's exactly where I'm at!  I'm not getting the options drop down panel that you've posted. I've already down loaded a copy of Ubuntu 16 on both disk and usb. This is a dual boot Laptop Windows7/Ubuntu how do I boot from disc or usb?

If I select recovery mode from the advanced menu I can either press enter to boot or 'e' to edit or 'c' for a command line. If I press enter to boot then this is where all goes wrong. A screen of text messages results which terminating with a request to login! Can I do anything from options 'e' or 'c'
Would I be correct in assuming that after pressing enter (recovery mode) a panel of options should appear? if so this is not the case here, just the scrolling check screen.

Mark... I can't do anything! I just get the prompt to login, and what ever I enter comes up Login incorrect_this is the problem I'm having. So to attempt to enter a password only returns login incorrect.

I can't get the recovery menu to appear, only a request to login no matter what I try! I'll carry on with Windows 7 Ubuntu issues are beyond my limited knowledge, thanks for all your help Mark
