Linux Support / Re: Chrome Update help needed please!
« on: September 18, 2021, 11:53:07 pm »
Thank you fellas. I'll do that Sunday.  Not been using the Macbook the past few days.

I wanted to watch a series on Channel 5 online a couple of days ago and it wouldn't load. I thought my Chromebook must be too out of date, so I tried my Android tablet which is the latest version and it wouldn't work there either.

Then I accidentally got signed up to a free trial for Amazon Prime and accidentally even paid to rent a film, the next day, so what the heck, I thought I'd just watch it, cos it has Dan Stevens in it and my Chromebook seemed too out of date for that  too. I watched it on my Peppermint netbook. But- the shield icon at the bottom told me I had about 300 updates waiting! The updates on Peppermint normally only take 3 or 4 mins. This was quite a bit longer!

I'm not sure if Chrome is needing updating there still because there is a funny message at the top of the task bar which says "paused."

Thought you all might be interested to read this news. Of course this isn't a new concept to Linux users since we have been re- purposing and customising older laptops for years! Hence me having a Macbook Pro running on Ubuntu, and in the past I had an older HP laptop that Mark Greaves helped me put Peppermint onto.

I think you are right:

This package automates the process of launching downloads of the source   ?
? files for libdvdcss2 from videolan.org, compiling them, and installing    ?
 ? the binary packages (libdvdcss2 libdvdcss-dev).                           ?
 ?                                                                           ?
? Please run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg" to launch this process for  ?
 ? the first time.                                                           ?
 ?

I just put in those commands and not sure what I have to do now. This is the messages that came out of the terminal:

[email protected]:~$ sudo add-apt-repository multiverse
[sudo] password for avon:
'multiverse' distribution component is already enabled for all sources.
[email protected]:~$ sudo apt install libdvd-pkg
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
[email protected]:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: libdvd-pkg is broken or not fully installed.
[email protected]:~$

I would not win a prize for coding lol.

Linux Support / Chrome Update help needed please!
« on: September 12, 2021, 08:00:17 pm »
Hello guys, just logged into my Macbook running on Ubuntu and when I launched Chrome it said it is needing an update but I don't know how to do it. I know how to do it on Peppermint but I'm stumped on Ubuntu!

Some instructions would be very welcome!

I will in the near future take the Macbook to the computer repair blokes I know and pay them to put the latest Peppermint distro on it. Mark Greaves was right: Peppermint works better on a laptop.

I find all these updates on Chrome very annoying- why'd they keep doing this--sigh.

Another question for you, which is related. Since my Chromebook seems to be on its last update, when it is no longer working well enough for use, is it possible to clear the Chrome OS and put Peppermint on it to give it a new lease of life? I've read some people can do it.

I'm all for refurbishing laptops.

Well I´m using the Macbook again! My Chromebook is second hand and some sites have updated Chrome and they are not supporting it. Very annoying. I have another post about that.

I´m getting given another scanner off a local bloke this coming week, so it might work better on the Macbook. I will post about that when I have it. In the meantime the Peppermint netbook works the scanner I already have very well.

So I closed the terminal and opened it again and put in what it told me and then I got this message:

By closing the terminal, you left the process dangling, so blocking debconf.
You should have completed the install in the same terminal.

Try again (after a reboot) and see if that removed the lock
If not then try:

Code: [Select]
sudo fuser -vik /var/cache/debconf/config.dat
Will display the process and ask if you want to terminate it.

Then run:
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg

Ah ok thanks- will try that a bit later. I haven´t used the Macbook for a few weeks. It´s been in the bottom of my wardrobe! I have just got it out because my Chromebook seems to be on its last update, because I tried to create a post on Wordpress and it said my browser was unsupported! How annoying.

Matilda wiping Ubuntu and installing Peppermint won't fix the problem, Peppermint is Ubuntu, don't be disheartened there's a few other firmware files we can try, The one I tried was the one I thought most likely to work but maybe I was wrong, so if you're prepared to stick with me I'm prepared to keep trying

What do you want to do ?

Graeme

I've used this scanner so many times over a period of about 7 years on Peppermint and no problems with it. I didn't have so many firmware installation issues with Peppermint. It's not just the scanner but also the DVD package. That won't work either, but it works on the Peppermint netbook.

Peppermint works differently to Ubuntu. It is simpler and easier to use the software manager etc. I hardly have had any problems getting packages uploaded in the past using Peppermint. Mark always said it was the best distro for netbooks and laptops!

I've put the MacBook away for now. I'm having a think if I even want to keep it because it has some keys that stick, and a screen so reflective it is like a mirror! I can't really use it to watch anything (which is a shame cos of the big screen) unless it is a dim day or evening, and it needs to be plugged in all the time as the battery doesn't have much charge. Now, the netbook also needs to be plugged in, but it isn't big and heavy like the MacBook and it also gets very hot, so I got it a cooling mat which works, but doesn't stay as cool as the Chromebook does.
I might give it to my mate Dave to do his typing on (he writes zines). I already have the netbook and my Chromebook which between them, do all I want them to do.

I'll let you know in a couple of days what I've decided to do. Thanks for your help so far.

Nope, still says it is unable to connect. Don´t worry about it. I will get this Ubuntu wiped off and have Peppermint put on it instead. It never took so much effort to try and get things to work on Peppermint. I will shut this Macbook down until I can get the money together to get Peppermint put on it. (I think they will charge me about £50).

Ok that looks good to me

Try your scanner now

Graeme

Okay- I will go and get it from the hessian bag I keep it in, in my bedroom. Yeah--I need some sort of desk for all my computer stuff lol.

I have no idea what any of this means, especially ´avon´

You do know that the software is called document scanner on Ubuntu and not simple scanner as in Peppermint? It is not the same one.
