Peppermint / New Installation of Peppermint 9 on dual boot system(Solved)
« on: October 15, 2018, 08:08:42 pm »
Hi All,
I have an old but very reliable Dell Inspiron 1640 that is currently running Ubuntu 14.04 dual booted with peppermint 6, I have downloaded and burned to disc Peppermint 9 and have run this from the live disc with no problem (64 bit), I would like to replace  initially the Ubuntu 14.04 with the peppermint 9 and when happy this is running well remove the pepermint 6 also.

General Discussion / Purging Old Kernels
« on: January 22, 2018, 08:18:22 pm »
Hi Mark,
following on from the recent topic re Meltdown/Spectre and the massive amount of olbyobud kernels I had managed to amass, particularly on the Ubuntu 14.04 system I have come across a suggestion that byobu would be very useful. It looks very simple, what is your opinion of this and would it work in Peppermint as well as Ubuntu?

thanks in advance,

Thanks in advance for your help.

Peppermint / Dell E5420
« on: October 19, 2017, 11:30:22 am »
Hi Mark,
Well the laptop I bought for my Grandaughter has arrived, it looks good and boots up straight away to Windows 7. It is a Dell E5420, as you suggested might be a good buy, so here are the first of my questions to move forward:
1) Can I assume that this laptop will boot from a USB stick?
2) if so presumably go to the Peppermint website and download the Peppermint 8 image.
I am proposing to replace the Windows 7 with Peppermint 8 as I know nowt about Windows now ( not used since XP), unless you suggest otherwise, as I am always concerned re Viruses etc when using Windows.
Look forward to your advice on this matter, so can get cracking with this little project.

Many thanks in advance,

General Help & Advice / Laptop suggestions
« on: October 12, 2017, 08:23:37 pm »
Hi,
Not posted for quite a while, some time ago I bought a Dell Inspiron 6400 for use by my Grandson for his schoolwork using Peppermint 6, this has served him very well, I hasten to add.
I now need to purchase a used laptop for my Granddaughter for the same purpose, anybody any suggestions as to what would be a decent buy, I would again probably load one of the Peppermint series onto the laptop.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

General Help & Advice / Thank You
« on: February 04, 2016, 04:14:26 pm »
HI,
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone on here that has helped me over the time I have been a Linux User, your efforts are not in vain, I am really pleased to say that I have just managed to replace Peppermint 5 with Peppermint 6 on my dual boot desktop, booted to Live CD, ran Gparted, deleted the pep 5 partition, left the unallocated space on the HDD, installed, updated, upgraded etc and booted, all went fine... then I went into Chromium and suddenly the cursor froze and the screen became full of zigzag lines. I remembered when I installed Ubuntu 14.04 in 2014 that I had a lot of problems, well I found the topic on here (it ran to 5 pages) and am delighted to say that having read through it was able to use the relevant parts to change the graphic drivers and Peppermint 6 is now running alongside Ubuntu 14.04 on both my laptop and Desktop.
So it shows that some of it goes in eventually, and its worth sticking at it. It feels really good to sort out a problem yourself for once>

Thanks everyone,

Degsy

General Help & Advice / Problem since installing Dual Boot (SOLVED)
« on: January 07, 2016, 07:30:13 pm »
Hi Guys,
Last week I installed Peppermint 6 onto my Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop alongside Ubuntu 14.04, have been using Peppermint 6 with no problems ever since, however, today I tried to boot up Ubuntu and though it booted to the pinky coloured start screen with the password entry box, once i entered my password thennothing else happened, it just stayed stuck on that screen. Have rebooted and when I came to the same screen have used a guest account and this boots up fully into the system, this is where I am typing this query from now.
Any advice on why this might be happening would be greatly appreciated, many thanks in advance,
Note the Ubuntu was previously installed and was working fine up till the dual boot.

Peppermint / Dual boot question
« on: December 23, 2015, 07:06:12 pm »
Hi,
My desktop has Ubuntu 14.04 with Peppermint 5 dual booted, the Peppermint has never really worked very well on it so I primarily used Ubuntu. Is it straightforward to replace 5 with Peppermint 6 on this installation.
I have downloaded the iso and burned to disk, it boots fine to a live session on my laptop so your advice would be really helpful.
Thanks,

Degsy.

Peppermint / Auto Update Problem
« on: November 28, 2014, 11:30:35 am »
Hi Guys,
A little while ago I bought a Dell Inspiron 6400 with XP installed, this is for my Grandson as a homework computer, got rid of Windross and installed peppermint 5, was not getting notification of Auto updates, followed advice on Peppermint Forum to load Linux Mint Updater, no problems so far, except that this doesn't show auto updates either, i can get the updates, obviously by clicking the appropriate updater but it is not giving me auto notifications, always says the "The System is up to date" even when it isn't. It is quite possible I haven't checked a tickbox but your advice would be appreciated as I want to ensure grandson keeps the security up to date.

I have obtained a used Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop for my Grandson. It has XP loads, I want to replace this with Peppermint 5, am currently running a live CD on it. There is no Internet connection, the machine has. Broadcom network controller, do I need to install b43-fwcutter, can I do this in a live session by wiring with an Ethernet cable?

Thanks in anticipation of your help,

Peppermint / Peppermint 5 Install
« on: October 15, 2014, 05:28:26 pm »
Hi Guys,
I have just obtained a Dell Inspiron 6400 for my Grandson to use as a homework computer. The machine has XP installed, I intend to install Pep 5 instead, my question is this, is there a "new" version of Pep 5 or is it still the same as the one I  burned to disc when it was first released? Basically is there a new download or do I just use the original release?

TIA ,
Degsy
