General Help & Advice / 3 in 1 connection problem
« on: December 12, 2015, 10:21:22 am »
Hi all,

Couple of questions from a brand new OpenSuse user and relatively inexperienced Linux user.

Just installed 42.1
Cannot get HP printer to connect wirelessley. Officejet that was connected fine using Ubuntu and HPlip previously.
Using the HPlip wizard it doesn't find the printer at all. Is this something to do with the firewall?

Using KDE connect to connect android phone but it seems only one way - from phone to laptop. When I click OK on the KDE connect control panel, it disappears. Is this supposed to be like Airdroid and a two way connection? Only using this because again, the laptop cannot access the phone via USB connection - it just cannot access the SD card and files. This is my preferred connection method. Any ideas how to do this?

Kontact and Google 2 step verification. Email on Kmail is working fine but obviously there would be a separate app specific p/w generated by google for the calendar. - can I give Korganiser a different app p/w to the one that Kmail uses? Korganiser cannot acccess my calendar. Any ideas how to set this up?

And, for UK Linux users, what's the best monthly Linux magazine I can subscribe to?

Thanks in advance.
Have to say I love Suse and really hope I can get this all working.

General Help & Advice / Deepin - Bluetooth audio connectivity
« on: December 03, 2015, 09:36:49 am »

Recent install of Deepin and all is good but for bluetooth and user accounts.
Remembering I'm not all that tech savvy......

Bluetooth connects but laptop won't push sound to device - I've tried a few.
Come to think of it, it won't push audio out via a USB to the laptop stand either - will only come via laptop speakers.

And, I can't add a new user under accounts. Each time I try to add the name, the field stays blank and a blank box appears above. Screen shot attached.

Any and all ideas gratefully received.
Thanks in advance.

Jobs Wanted / Want to learn
« on: November 25, 2015, 03:20:05 pm »

Good afternoon,

I am keen for a career change and want to start learning more about Linux and Ubuntu and how these things all work from the ground up.
I'm a basic user but probably more advanced than your average Joe with a little terminal use, running home network etc ec - nothing to set the IT world alight.
I'm putting myself through Google Partners Analytics Academy and slowly tinkering with app development on Android. In my day job I'm a senior manager of charities and teams/projects and have recently been managing social media for one charity. I manage my own Joomla website and have basic experience of web management tools/interfaces.

Question really is, what should I learn first and how to plan a way in and where can I find some resources to help? Online I presume?
I'm in the South East of England if it helps.

Thanks in advance.

General Help & Advice / File sync software on Ubuntu 15.10
« on: November 25, 2015, 03:10:07 pm »
Hello all,

Question regarding file sync software for Ubuntu 15.10. What should I use and how do I install it? Remembering that I barely get around terminal and don't understand the language.
I use a seagate external network drive and a plug in version too (paranoid about data loss or what?).
I've tried free file sync and this keeps coming up with some errors on JPEGS - stuff like ffs.tmp ? and so will not copy all files.

I have tried and failed to install good sync and synkro and a host of others. Their instructions are not clear and I cannot get them installed.

Any and all help would be mightily appreciated.

And, I've installed insync Google Drive client. Works really well but, at start up it says the app is running and will be closed but it isn't running and I can't find it to close. I have to move to trash and reinstall. Again, any experience.advice?

Thanks in advance.

General Discussion / Newbie advice

Hello team,
Very tempted to switch from windows 8.1 to ubuntu. Bit of a PC novice but not as novice as some.
A few questions before I do (sorry for the inquisition):
If I run it as a dual system for a while until familiar with Ubuntu, will I then be able to ask Ubuntu to take over from Windows and replace it?
I use a home based WD mycloud for back ups - will Ubuntu be able to back up to this and will I be able to access files from it?
Does itunes work with Ubuntu?
Will I need anti malware software such as Hitman pro or Malware bytes? Can I ditch Bitdefender?
Will cloud based storage such as Google drive and Dropbox work with Ubuntu?
Will Sonos controller work with Ubuntu?
Does Spotify work with Ubuntu?
Will photoshop work with Ubuntu?
There are other questions but these are the main one for now.

Appreciate your time.
