General Help & Advice / New Computer Problems With Mint 19.3
« on: March 09, 2020, 11:01:02 am »
Bit of help needed please. I have been using Mint  for about 10 years now. I recently bought a new laptop and installed 19.3 over the Win 10 and I can't access the internet using wifi, however, Xubuntu connects with no problem. There are other issues like screen backlight commands won't work and all the desk top icons and fonts are very small, though these are low priority at the moment. I like the Xubuntu but I would like to use 19.3 as an option - any ideas Please?

I have taken this s/shot if it helps:

General Help & Advice / Mint 19.3 Disappointment - Not solved afterall!
« on: January 14, 2020, 09:13:50 am »
I recently upgraded to Mint 19.2 then 19.3 from Mint 17 and I am really disappointed with it, especially the newer 19.3. Boot up is ok, 40 seconds but during a session it always gets progressively slower - I'm really fed up with the sight of the never ending whirlygig when loading up a new window or at the beginning and during a video. I replaced the HDD with an SSD, with a fresh installation of M19.3, hoping that would help also I have done the recommended tweaks for a new installation. M17 ran like a Swiss watch, I really miss it and regret this 'upgrade'.

Can someone recommend something better than this ponderous o/s, back to M18 perhaps? It reminds me of the bad old days of Microdaft on dial up!

(HP Probook 455G2 8Mb 960Mb SSD)

General Help & Advice / Upgrading LM 17.3? [Solved]
« on: July 31, 2019, 10:44:16 am »
I use 17.3 exclusively but I gather that it is no longer supported so what are my options for upgrading to the latest version of LM or would I have to do a fresh installation of whatever is best?

General Help & Advice / Firefox crashing after update. [Solved]
« on: January 25, 2018, 10:55:53 am »
I have Mint 17.3 Rosa 64bit and did a recommended update on Firefox yesterday,  since then Firefox keeps crashing with the following idiotic message: 'Gah. your tab has just crashed'. It then invites me to report this to them etc. Can you advise me how to fix this - preferably reverse the update so that Firefox can work properly again?

I am thinking of buying this HP as I need a backlit keyboard. It has preinstalled Win 7. I currently use Mint 17.3 exclusively will there be any problems installing Mint on to it?

Edit: Problem sorted.

Hello - I tried to install 4 updates in Update Manager today and I got these 2 error messages:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

What action should I take?

Thank you.

General Help & Advice / Problems with Updates
« on: September 12, 2017, 05:43:29 pm »
The update shield on my Mint 17 panel is showing a red cross, when I click it I get  a long column of various 'W:Failed to fetch http://ftpticklers.org/archive.ubuntu.org/dists/trusty-updates/xxxxx/Packages Hash Sum mismatch
It keeps appearing, other updates seem to be installed ok. It does say that some index files failed to download. They have been ignored or old ones used. How can I get rid of this please?

General Help & Advice / How do you actually use WINE?
« on: June 26, 2017, 09:18:50 am »
As the title asks... I have been an exclusive Mint user for about ten years now, I am not particularly computer literate but love Linux. However, occasionally I have tried to use MS compatible software, I have downloaded WINE to do this, got it out of the software repository actually, but come up against  'a brick wall'  when I try to use WINE.

There are no basic instructions - I just would like to be told in simple language how to go about using it to access the Windows files. I fiddle and fart around with it for ages, receive loads of  unintelligible error messages so end up deleting it - Please help!

General Help & Advice / iesnare and mpsnare spy cookies

Last August I posted about concerns I have about spy cookies iesnare and mpsnare being installed on my computer. I added 'Better Privacy' to Firefox as advised and I thought all was well. However, I did a routine search and the following came up:

It looks to my untrained eye that I have still got the 2 cookies, certainly on Chromium which I very rarely use. 'Better Privacy' is active on Firefox but how can I rid my computer of these cookies and, crucially, ensure they never come back, please?

Printers and Scanners / Which Printer is Best for Mint 17.2
« on: February 02, 2017, 02:44:38 pm »
Hello, my Canon Pixma has died and I need a new, basic mono laser printer to run off my HP ProBook with Mint 17.2. An inkjet recommendation would be of interest also.  I don't want to spend a lot as I do very little printing.

Thank you.

General Help & Advice / Adobe Flash Player
« on: September 06, 2016, 05:52:27 pm »
I have Mint 17.2 64 bit. Up to today I have been able to play videos on the BBC News site without any problem. Today  when I tried to play one I get a message saying Flash player needed to play this video - download now. When I click the download nothing happens. I can't understand why this  has happened, as far as I know I haven't altered anything. Is there an alternative video play I can use? I would appreciate some advice. Thank you.

General Help & Advice / How to check for existence of a file on Mint?
« on: August 24, 2016, 08:38:06 am »
Hello,

I visit betting sites and have heard that there is a file or cookie called IEsnare which some bookies install on customers' computers to track their betting activity. How do I check and remove the possible existence of this please?  I have Mint 17.

General Help & Advice / Black Screen with Meaningless Error Message!
« on: April 16, 2016, 10:38:45 am »
HP Pro Book 455 with MINT 17.3 Rosa installed.

Occasionally my computer will shut down to a black screen with the following error message in the top LH corner of the screen:

Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa graham-HP-ProBook-455-G2 tty 1.
graham-HP-ProBook-455-G2 login: (flashing cursor)

This happened  last when I attempted to enlarge a PDF file I had just down loaded. I try to log in with my password but it does not recognise it. The only remedy I have is to cut the power with the main switch and then re-boot. I am worried that this is damaging the system. How can I avoid this error or how can I return to the page I was on without shutting the computer down?
