General Discussion / Chinese Chips
« on: January 30, 2021, 03:36:58 pm »
Hi Folks,

I'm thinking of upgrading my old Aspire 5710 by installing a faster CPU.  Currently sporting a Core 2 Duo T5500, it would speed up, it appears, by about 30% if I could find a reasonably cheap T7600, say, or to be a little less ambitious, a TT7400.  I'm wondering, does anybody here know anything about those chinese manufactured CPUs available on the internet. Are they the real thing?/reliable?/worth considering?  These old processors are no longer made by Intel apparently, so the only other choice would be a second-hand one.  Both routes clearly come with attached risks, but which would be the best bet?  Another issue might be the BIOS.  Would that need to be changed before changing the CPU?  I'd certainly be happier if the answer to that question was a resounding NO!  :)  Anyone out there got an opinion?/information?/advice? (even if it's just 'get a faster computer'. Thanks for reading this anyway,

Best Regards,

General Discussion / Recent update to V20 - Ulyana
« on: August 03, 2020, 04:40:39 pm »
Hi Folks,
I have an old Acer 5710 Aspire which I recently converted to Linux v19 Tricia from Vista. I was so encouraged by the change over that I didn't think twice
before I updated it to Ulyana.
Following the update the  Acer hard drive has suddenly got very little space left and (consequently, I believe) the machine is running v.e.e.ery slowly. Two
of the files,' /timeshift' and '/var', have got very big indeed  -  31.1Gb and 28.2Gb respectively. The hard drive capacity is only 70.7Gb anyway, so the
limited free space left seems to be the problem. My questions are   1)  Why have these files got so big?
                                                                                                     2)  Do they need to be that size?
                                                                                                     3)  What can I do to reduce them?
                                                                                                     4)  How do I prevent them from getting bigger?
Hope you can still help me out, folks.

Best Regards to you all,

Jeff C.

Hardware Compatibility / Isthis possible
« on: April 01, 2020, 02:30:35 pm »
Hi folks,
I have an old laptop running Windows Vista. It doesn't want to connect to the internet any more and the (obscenity deleted) operating system won't connect to the M'soft update centre. probably, it's not there any more for Vista. So, I'm wondering if I can change the operating system to Linux, and still use this device as my Zoom communication centre?
Technical Spec. as follows:-         ACER Aspire 5710 laptop
                                                 Intel 2-core CPU   T5500   1.67GHz
                                                 2.00GB Ram
Running activated Vista Home Premium 32-bit operating system

It seems a pity if I can't extend the usefulness of this very trusty machine, which has served me well since I got it.
Can this machine be converted? If so, anybody out there with some good 'How-To' advice?

Best Regards and Happy Isolation

Jeff C.
