General Help & Advice / Sticky Notes not working after upgrade
« on: March 11, 2019, 02:58:13 pm »
Mint 18.3 cinnamon 64bit - I upgraded from version 18.2 and when I booted this morning "Sticky Notes" failed to start.

I was asked to check if I had the latest version which I do only updated this month.

No one had reported the same problem with mint18.3 with this taskbar app.

I was also told to check the system log but I can not find it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Peppermint / Home , Trash and other desktop icons (resolved)
« on: February 04, 2019, 11:21:04 am »
Peppermint 8 64bit

As I have done a clean install and I can not find the setting to place the Home, Computer, Trash and Network icons on the desk top.

I had them before............  I tried looking under file settings no joy.

Help please.

I am using peppermint 8 64bit

We previously installed this wifi adapter and it was working fine.

I have not used the wifi for around 8 months but need to use it this coming week so plugged it in and the adapter  was not seen by the system.

There have been 2 Kernel updates since it was installed and just to see I booted using the original Kernel and the adapter was working OK again.
How do I make it work with the new Kernel or do I need to remove the new kernels and if so how do I remove them or force the system to boot from the original.

As always any help would be appreciated.

Running mint 18.2 64bit cinnamon

Some years ago I got instruction on this forum how to install a 32bit version of wine on my 64bit system.

The wine version has been fixed since that time.

Now to install a new version of MS office I need to install a newer version of wine.

How do I install a newer version whilst keeping it the 32bit version of wine?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Linux Solutions / Recomend software for creation of a platform
« on: December 04, 2018, 11:51:06 am »
We are looking for a software package that works with Linux (also windows would be an advantage).

We want to set up a platform with a number of subject rooms up to 20. User security is of importance as is the look of the finished site.

We need something that looks as if it is modern and we are willing to pay a small fee for the right software.

Any suggestions or recommendations welcome.

Thank you.

General Help & Advice / Presentation freezes
« on: December 04, 2018, 11:40:21 am »
SAMSUNG R60plus using a recent version of Peppermint 64bit.

I use this computer to display a revolving photographic selection around 200 photos.

After about an hour of operation it freezes on one photo and all keys on the keyboard and the mouse are also frozen.

The only option is to restart I have tried using both the software options that come with Peppermint.

Any suggestion please.

Today it ran for 2hours using a different software for the slideshow then it again just froze.  I was checking the GPU temp and it was normal the system just stops responding.

Anyone have any thoughts.

Peppermint / How to incresse fan speed on my laptop? (resolved)
« on: July 20, 2018, 10:48:32 am »
I am running Peppermint 8 64bit on my old Samsung R60 plus.

Is it possible to increase the speed of the fan?
The speed never seems to change even when the system is operating under a heavy load.

Yes some times the laptop shuts down due to over heating because the fan is running so slowly.

Any help welcome.

General Help & Advice / Gnubiff not working correctly (Resolved)
« on: February 01, 2018, 09:15:50 am »
I am running mint 18.2 64bit   I have used Gnubif ( a programe that checks all my email accounts for new mail) for over 5 years on a number of different systems the last being mint 17.3 64bit.

Now I have a problem the program works fine whilst it is open but if you close the program it forgets all the details of the email accounts and you have to input all the account details again.

Any suggestions what could be wrong.

I am using mint 18.2 64bit Cinereum

And yet again with a change to a newer version my wife's favourite game has lost its sound.

Below is a link to how it was solved for mint 17.3 64bit mate.

I tried using the mint 17.3 fix but not working.

Any assistance welcome.

General Help & Advice / Changing desktop luncher icons (Resolved)
« on: January 14, 2018, 03:08:30 pm »
Changing desktop luncher icons - mint 18.2 64 bit Cinnamon.

I have created 3 launchers for  word, excel and ppt that work fine but would like to change the icon as they are all the same.

In mint 17.3 mate I was able to do this by including the jpeg images in the icons file and then just selecting the new icon but this option seems to be missing from 18.2.............?

Any thoughts.

General Help & Advice / Combine workgroups (Resolved)
« on: January 13, 2018, 12:06:57 pm »
New clean install mint 18.2 64bit system.

In windows networks there are two workgroups 1. WORKGROUP just has the current computer 2. 000D0B6DA3C4 which has all the other components of the LAN

Is there some way to combine the two into one.    I seem to remember that in an older version of mint there was a way to change the name of the workgroup.

Any advice welcome.

I use mint 17.3 mate 64bit. (Desk Top system)

This morning I was offered an update for the NVIDIA driver and on reboot the display no longer expands to fill the screen.

I am only offered one resolution  1920 x 1080 and the system no longer detects the make or model of my screen.

The Card is a GeFORCE 610 and the recommended driver is nivida-384 which is the driver that is installed.

Help needed.......

Update I have tried booting with a live USB and everything works normally so something must have corrupted the system on the computer.  Is there a way to restore the default video system?

I seem to have fixed the problem - removed all references to NVIDIA and then scanned for drivers installed the recomended driver and everything has been restored to full working order.
