General Discussion / Re: Reasons to be thankful
« on: December 08, 2015, 08:40:13 pm »
As an Aging Graying Portly Old Hippy :)
and a lesser mortal on all things Linux, I have loads to be thankful for.
I'm still amazed at the amount of people, who give up their free time, to develop and maintain the software, and to help others, which creates such a great community.

About a year and a half ago, I rediscovered photography and linux was always seen as a wasteland for photography.
Then I discovered 3 things that transformed my photography,

http://www.damonlynch.net/rapid/ which not only downloads but does so much more.

http://geeqie.sourceforge.net/ a very easy to customise viewer.

http://www.darktable.org/ This has to be the best of open source, people in their spare time have created something on par (some would say better) than what the mighty ;) Adobe has created ie Lightroom.
and darktable will not accept donations,

So along with Gimp, RawTherapee, Lightzone and others, a good full list can be found on Pat Davids site https://pixls.us/  Pat BTW is another who gives so much time to all things Gimp,( he's just revamped the web site) and all thing FOSS.

So a BIG thanks to all :) :) :)

Keith.

ps Gimp has just celebrated its 20th anniversary,

AND to you Mark, a big thanks from me ;D

My wife bought a Kodak ESP C310 a while ago (I won't tell you what I said ;))

I managed to get it to print through cloud print, in a fashion, only photos.

Running Linux Lite, I saw this post and tried your instructions and it works great,

So again thanks,

Keith

Android devices / Re: Catch-up TV apps
« on: June 30, 2015, 09:15:21 pm »
I-Player is ok
Demand5 only works on wi-fi, which seems crazy for a phone on 3g
ITV and 4OD are both poor. One of them had a problem with ad blocker, so I ditched them ages ago
BUT
Sky Go works brilliant and I can access all, (bar BBC I-player.)
So I'm alright jack ;)
Its almost like the terrestrial channels don't want you to watch on catch up.

Android devices / Re: Battery Management Apps?
« on: April 24, 2015, 04:46:03 pm »
All the battery saving apps I've tried, have not worked, or as you say, use more battery.
I've been using wakelockdetector, which tells you which apps are using most power in the background or when the phone is switched off or if you have any wakelocks . I've been using for over a year with no problems.

General Help & Advice / deleting win 7 partition
« on: December 15, 2014, 03:49:37 pm »
My laptop has duel partition, win 7 and peppermint 5.

even my wife never uses the win partition, so I'm zapping it and putting linux lite in its place.

I installed Linux Lite on my netbook, that was running so slow, I hadn't used it for ages, then after installing Linux Lite it almost flies. (and the wife loves it)

So, I know how to get rid of win7 and replace with linux lite,
BUT, is there any unexpected pitfalls, totally zapping win7?

Looking forward to being " windowless again" ;D

Peppermint / Re: Schizophrenic USB stick?
« on: November 29, 2014, 07:11:29 pm »
when I need to know the size of a stick, after plugging in, I go to menu>accessories>disks, this will show the size of all disks and free space,

This is on peppermint 3 and 5.

Hope that helps.

General Help & Advice / Re: changing video files to VOB files

@ chemicalfan
he uses "OJOSoftVOB converter" this is for "info only" as its on that other inferior os, he says it does multiple files at the same time.

@ chemicalfan, I've just text him to find out what programme he uses, so will let you know when he replies,

@ Mark, I always like a different solution to a problem, so will have a look and let you know how I get on.

General Discussion / Re: Remote Access Trojans
« on: November 24, 2014, 01:29:44 pm »
thanks for confirming what I thought,

I've been on linux for about 6 years and have always felt safe, just wanted to know I wasn't getting blasé,

On this laptop, which I bought off gumtree and was loaded with win 7 which I duel booted ( wife likes word for work)
I very rarely go on windows but when I do, it frightens me to death, the first thing I get is pop ups saying "your computer is at risk", upgrade to the full version of avast, no wonder these av companies keep going.

thanks

I have to say it quietly he's on  windows :'(. I'm trying to convert him so cannot say I don't know know to do it)

they are films I have on my hard drive, transferred from his computer via filezilla, some are mp4 some avi and some I've never heard of.
