General Help & Advice / lightburn
« on: June 17, 2019, 08:06:30 pm »
Hi Mark,
I would like to install lightburn on my linux computer, it comes with the following info.

Linux Installation
1. Open a terminal and run the following command:
sudo adduser $USER dialout && sudo adduser $USER tty
2. IMPORTANT! Log out and log back in (this refreshes the permissions we just added)
3. Download the Linux 64-bit version
4. Extract the folder wherever you want Lightburn to exist
5. Double click AppRun inside your Lightburn folder

Is this ok to install ?? I don't like to install anything and then come back here to get un-install advice when it doesn't work, or should I just try and see what happens ??

I only ask as I usually install Linux alongside an existing Windows installation and it would seem logical to wipe the HD and install Windows first then add the Linux install. ??

General Help & Advice / Help needed with dual booting

I really need to dual boot in this machine. I have some programmes that will only run in Windows. Can I install Windows beside Peppermint or will I need to wipe the HD, install Windows and the install Peppermint alongside ???

Thanks Mark,
I have the Samsung running ok and it does what is needed. I have paid for the key to run the programme on that machine and it will be sent pretty quickly. Thanks for the interest in this, I did have quite a lot of faffing about with various VBox, PlayonLinux, Wine etc. programmes but that is all solved now. I will only be using the Samsung to burn some coasters at the moment but I hope to get it to cut 1/4" plywood soon.

take care

General Help & Advice / Re: Help needed to run Windows only programme

Hi Mark,
I need control of the USB ports to run this programme as I am trying to control a laser engraver from the programme.
I have a Samsung Notebook with Win 7 that has been resurrected and can run this programme so I can now mark this solved.
Thanks for the help.

General Help & Advice / (Solved) Help needed to run Windows only programme
« on: November 14, 2018, 09:46:42 am »
Hi ,
I need help to run a Windows programme that will NOT be ported to Linux.
I have tried Wine, Winetricks , Play on Linux, VB etc. but none of them seem to work as I want.
I realise that this problem is not really a Unix problem as such so I can only hope for general advice in this matter.
I am thinking the only way to get this programme to run is by dual booting and using Windows to run this programme. I have a 64 bit January 2014 Windows 7 disc (with Service Pack 1) and hoping this would be OK for the Windows side ??
Any thoughts ??

Peppermint is lighter on system resources than Mint, so better suited to older PC's (as well as new ones where you want all your resources for applications rather than the OS itself).

Oh, and because I help make it ;)

And a very good job of making it you have done !!! Thanks Mark   ;)

On my Novatech the Fn/F12 keys are the wireless control, if that helps ??

Thanks Mark,
I tried that suggestion but with no luck.
I went to Printers and selected the Epson > 'Print test page'. The box now shows 'Printer State' Processing-Rendering complete. When I look in the print queue it says 'Processing'. I went for lunch.
After lunch I checked again and it was still 'Processing'. I cancelled the job after 50 minutes.
So it looks as I have no success with that ??
