Netbooks / Re: Why does installing Calibre also install Imagemagik
« on: January 16, 2019, 12:30:39 pm »
Hi guys

I uninstalled Imagemagik from my daughters netbook in Synaptic  and i noticed it listed Calibre as one of the packages to be uninstalled along with it but I went along with it because I wanted rid of Imagemagik, after uninstalling sure enough Calibre was gone so I went back into Synaptic and tried to reinstall Calibre and when I mark for installation and apply it's listing Imagemagik as one of the packeges to be installed again. Notepad++ Malwarebytes FileZilla

I tried installing Calibre from the terminal but as you can see it wants to install Imagemagik

Any ideas how I can install calibre without Imagemagik ?

Many thanks

I'm guessing you can't - it's a dependency. Calibre won't work without Imagemagik.

Peppermint / Re: Peppermint 8 live USB not responding
« on: January 15, 2019, 08:34:40 pm »
Having found a very old laptop (Dell 505, 32 bit, 2GB RAM) with Peppermint 3 on it, I thought I would upgrade it and donate it to a friend who has need of one.

I downloaded the Peppermint 8, 32 bit ISO and checked the md5sum - OK.
Then I used UNETBOOTIN to create a live USB.
I have tried it on both my Lenovo T500 (64 bit) and the Dell 505 with the boot orders set to boot from the USB first, but it always boots into the installed OS on both machines. 8 Ball Pool Discord Omegle
The Lenovo boots successfully into an 64 bit Ubuntu live USB and the Dell tries but naturally tells me politely that it's the wrong architecture.

I would be grateful for any advice.
Thank you.
Both the T500 and D505 recognise the Ubuntu Live USB but neither recognise the Peppermint one.

Ubuntu / Re: Can't change swappiness (Solved)
« on: January 15, 2019, 08:33:57 pm »
Just been trying to change swappiness in Xubuntu.

First, I got a message that gedit was not installed, so I followed the recommendation to install it.
That seemed to go ok, but when I tried to edit sysctl.conf the problems started. Despite error messages, sysctl.conf was presented in a different window and I was able to edit and save it, but when I re-run cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness, the edit has not affected swappiness (ie: it's still set to 60, not 10)

Any ideas please? Thanks in advance.

Ubuntu / Re: Meltdown/Spectre patches(Solved)
« on: January 15, 2019, 08:33:06 pm »
Hi Mark,
You recently posted on the peppermint forum a link for users of Pep 6 to update for the above, this I have done, thanks, however just wondering about Ubuntu 14.04 which I run dual booted with Pep 6, how can i ensure that I have the latest patches for the problems with Meltdown/Spectre.

Thanks in advance for your help. Audacity Find My iPhone Origin

I doubt you need to do anything in Ubuntu 14.04 (besides normal updates) as long as you're on their default kernel.
