Linux Support / Mounting problems, in need of serious help!
« on: May 12, 2011, 03:46:19 am »
I need some serious help. I'm currently dual booting between Ubuntu 10.09 & Windows Vista. A couple of days ago my Vista decided it wasn't going to load anymore, and so I can't even log on, all I get are system hangs (how typical of MS). Anyway, I have a lot of photos, and important files I use for my photography on the Vista partition. Now I used to be able to load the files directly from the partition through Ubuntu but now it won't mount the whole HDD at all. I can access the local partition relevant to Ubuntu but that's it. I keep getting this ERROR message.

"Unable to mount Local HDD

Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: $MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 0).
Failed to mount '/dev/sda2': Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation
for more details."

Please help, I've got files I need to recover before destroying Vista for good, lol.  :(

Linux Support / I'm dualbooting, and I need help on a little matter...
« on: April 08, 2011, 04:15:32 am »
I'm currently dual booting Ubuntu 10.10 with Windows Vista (please don't ask why...). I'm currently using the GRUB2 bootloader, but I need to reset my Vista back to factory settings as I wanna clear it up, and get rid of the clutter that's on it atm. Now I've backed up all my important stuff that I need (docs, music, pictures, files, etc) into Ubuntu, and also onto my USB stick just incase. Now my problem here is this: If and when I goto reset Windows, how will I go about it (because i'm not using the windows bootloader anymore) and will the GRUB MBR files be overwritten?

Linux Support / No power button?

The icon for the power settings seems to have gone missing, I have no clue as too how, but I've searched the "Add to Panel" list for it and it ain't there.
Is there a way I can get it back?

Linux Support / Ubuntu 10.10 can't mount?
« on: December 10, 2010, 07:29:55 pm »
Downloaded the new Ubuntu 10.10 distro from
Code: [Select]
. I downloaded the 32-bit version, since I was going to install it along side Vista. It's my mothers laptop, but my PC is currently broken atm, (needs new mobo & CPU), so I'm using my mum's laptop. Downloaded fine, actually finished downloaded just after I got up at half 5. I've burned two discs and neither of them are working, so I'm beginning to think that there's something wrong with the download. I burned one disc at a speed of x4 and the other one at x2.4 onto a DVD-R for data/video. I've installed Ubuntu 10.09 on these discs before so I know it ain't the discs, and I've burned numberous Windows OS's aswell.

I keep getting an error message about Ubuntu failing to mount because of some I/O error. If I was to put the disc in when logged into windows it would run wubi.exe and it boots up the loading screen when I boot from disc. Anyone know what the problem might be?

EDIT: I've tried to boot from a USB using the "usb-creator" but for some reason it won't insert the file into the menu.. like if I choose "Other" and then point it to the file location "C:\Users\Me\Downloads\ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso" it won't appear in the menu. I'm even running the program as an administrator. Also tried following this guide
Code: [Select]

Linux Support / Newbie Help?
« on: June 30, 2010, 11:41:37 pm »
ohi there, i was looking to see if anyone would be able to help me answer a couple of questions as i am unsure of what to do since i am in a bit of a predicament.

well i have known about linux for a year or so, and was considering a move but i was unsure at the time and just left it. but since then, as of late i've been currently having problems with my pc. as i'm sure everyone is aware, windows se7en was released not to long ago and so as like many others i wanted to upgrade from vista to windows 7. so i borrowed my friends disc and installed everything, and all was good. the first 2 reboots were fine, but after i shut down my pc and booted up again then next morning i got the message

Windows Booting

Windows Vista Loader 2.0.2

great i thought, and my pc was left like that for a couple of weeks until i found the recovery disc which i had made earlier before installing win7. so i installed vista again everything was well only problem was. since i had upgraded to win7 it wiped the OEM partition back-up version of vista. so i had no product-key for my vista.
so thinkin i was smart, i tried to install windows 7 again, but as last time it fail. so i reinstalled vista, to which i then got a catastrophic virus, which damaged the system files. so being so p**sed of with vista, i downgraded to XP. ofcourse everything was fine. but i didnt like it at all, and decided to upgrade AGAIN. so now after the 3rd of installing vista, i have now decided i want to change OS.. and go in a new direction i.e. Linux. being open-source i thought it would be a good move.

from what i know. it has the capability of supporting most windows files, but im not sure of programs. such as photoshop cs4, after effects cs4, song vegas 9 pro, and LFS (Live For Speed). oh and MSN. these are basically my essentials for using my pc. so would linux support these programs?
also, is the installion process any different from you're normal mac / windows setup? the reason i'm asking these questions is, i'm just sick of windows being such a cock and i want to know if linux will do the same? and which version of linux should i use?

any advice, help & tips would be great
