Ubuntu / Problem with 14.04 (Solved)
« on: October 08, 2014, 11:50:25 am »
Hi Guys,
I have a desktop(self build) that was originally running 12.04 LTS, I have installed peppermint 5 to run alongside this with out any problems. I decided to upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04, the upgrade seemed to go alright except that now the computer "locks up" on booting to Ubuntu 14.04.
On switch on I am offered the choices for Ubuntu or Peppermint 5, if I choose Peppermint the computer boots up and I have no problem.
If I choose Ubuntu, then the computer boots up as normal, goes to the password entry screen, as normal, I enter password and then the boot up fails, I have had a blank type screen with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS in the bottom left corner but nothing else and no mouse or keyboard. If I press the reset button the computer reboots, offers me the options again, choose Ubuntu and got to the password screen, this time loaded the desktop but with the following message in the top left corner:
System program problem detected
Do you want to report the problem now?
Cancel        Report Problem

No mouse or keyboard operating.
Any help would be appreciated.
Please note I have tried loading Ubuntu 14.04 from a CD and get the same problem, though the disk is fine as I have loaded 14.04 onto a Laptop from the same disk.

Help.

General Help & Advice / Convewrting AVI into MPEG4(Solved)

Hi Guys,
I want to convert some home video, (holiday type stuff) from AVI to MPEG4  so that it will hopefully play from a USB stick on my Sony Bravia TV, your suggestions would be most appreciated. I would prefer the simplest of solutions  in order to carry out this task.

Ubuntu / Keyboard odd happening
« on: August 29, 2014, 01:26:35 pm »
Hi All,
Not being a great fan of Unity Desktop, I decided to try adding Cinnamon 2.2 as per a link from Mark in another thread. This seemed to work fine and I quite like the look of the Cinnamon desktop, however I have come across a problem, quite likely of my own making as I have been "playing around" with the features of this desktop. When in Thunderbird Mail when I try to type an email address the keyboard wont let me use the @ key, it just shows up as, ' or", but not @, anybody any suggestions as to what might have happened?
This is no big deal as I am only playing around with this and if necessary will uninstall the Cinnamon desktop.
Details: Dell Inspiron  6400 Laptop running 64 bit Ubuntu 14.04,
no problems with the keyboard when i am using the Unity Desktop as you can see from the characters displayed in this message.

Thanks in advance,

Degsy

Peppermint / Enjoying Peppermint 5
« on: August 14, 2014, 08:25:44 pm »
Hi Guys,
I just thought it was worth mentioning how much I am enjoying Peppermint 5, I did use Pep 4 but since installing 5 alongside Ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop I have been playing around with it much more. Thanks to the helpful advice on this and the Peppermint Forum I have successfully added Docky to my set up and am gaining in confidence in the general use of Peppermint 5. Hope to do a bit more customising of my system over the course of the next few weeks and no doubt will be back with questions when I (inevitably) c@ck up the whole thing.

Again thanks to everyone who contributes, it really is appreciated.

General Discussion / Peppermint 5 and Ubuntu 14.04 installed
« on: August 05, 2014, 06:52:58 pm »
A little while ago I decided to replace  Ubuntu12.04 with 14.04 on my Desktop and Peppermint 4 with 5 on my old Dell Laptop, created the live CD's for both OS and off we go. Well the  14.04 would not run on the desktop and though the Peppermint 5 ran as a live CD on the laptop it would not boot after install. After some questions and the usual great help from the members on here I finally decided to try the 14.04  on the Laptop and it worked straight away! Have run thus now for some weeks and it's fine, today I decided to try the Peppermint 5 CD in the desktop, dual booted it with the 12.04 and ,  yes you have guessed it , it works just fine! I think I will never understand computers.
Anyway one happy bunny with both systems operating though on transposed computers.
No doubt I will be back soon with more questions.

Cheers,
 Degsy

Peppermint / Peppermint 5 won't boot
« on: July 03, 2014, 09:40:16 pm »
Hi Guys,
Decided to install Peppermint 5 in place of Pep 4 on my ageing Dell Inspiron 1640 laptop. The installation seemed to go ok and the screen came up for restart after installation, I did the restart but the touchpad locked up, screen went black, lots of writing including something about Kernel panic. Managed to shut down but now it just gets to the peppermint starting up screen and goes no further.

Your advice as always would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Degsy

Tried again using recovery mode, the second option on the Boot Menu and after much screen writing etc the system booted successfully!
Not sure if this is helpful/useful but here it is

General Help & Advice / Odd happening
« on: June 26, 2014, 11:43:24 am »
Hi Guys,
I run Peppermint 4 64 bit on an old Dell Inspiron 1640 that used to run XP and also Ubuntu 12.04 on a self build desk top. Successfully downloaded, burned and loaded the live Peppermint 5 to the laptop, decided to try Ubuntu 14.04 on the desktop, it loads and allows be to boot into the Try Ubuntu, then locks up, freezes and eventually crashes. Used the same DVD with Ubuntu 14.04 on the Peppermint laptop and this boots up fine into the live session, any suggestions anyone?
This is not critical as I can either continue with 12.04 on the desktop or maybe even run Peppermint 5 on the desktop as well.

Thanks in advance,
Degsy.

Printers and Scanners / Do I update?
« on: March 09, 2014, 01:53:57 pm »
Hi everyone,
Hopefully this is a very quick question to answer.
I have an HP 5520 all in one which is wirelessly connected to my laptop, desktop and (iPad) (ignore the last word Mark), I have a static IP as per your instructions previously, all is working well, just got a notification that there is an update from HP, should I continue with this or just ignore the update? Don't want to mess up when everything is working fine.
I am hoping the answer is a straight "Yes " or "No".

TIA, Degsy

Printers and Scanners / Printer Problem(Solved)
« on: February 21, 2014, 04:10:53 pm »
Hi Guys,
Having a problem again with my HP Photosmart 5520 All-in One, cant get it to print on either my Laptop or Desktop.
Laptop is running Peppermint 4 64 bit, and the printer has worked in the past. Desktop running Ubuntu 12.04, again been able to print and scan etc in the past now get the same error on both machines as follows:
HPLIP Device Status. Photosmart_5520_series Printer (192.168.1.2)
Device Communication Error (5012)
The printer is connected wirelessly, and just for info, prints no problem from my iPad2.

Your help and input, as always would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,
Degsy.

Ubuntu / Transferring video clips to disc((SOLVED)
« on: December 28, 2013, 11:36:11 am »
Hi Everyone,
I would be interested in suggestions for a SIMPLE programme to transfer and edit holiday clips to DVD/CD, nothing too fancy, just stringing the clips together and maybe adding titles etc.
I want to do this on my desktop running Ubuntu 12.04, your comments and suggestions for this would be appreciated, as I said simplicity is preferred to something "all singing, all dancing".

Many thanks,
Degsy

General Help & Advice / Changes to Dual Boot System (Closed)
« on: December 26, 2013, 12:26:20 pm »
Hi Guys,
Some time ago with a great deal of help from Mark I managed to set up a dual boot system on my ageing Dell Inspiron 1540 Laptop, I would now like to increase the amount of disk space that is available to Peppermint4. The system is Peppermint 4 (64 bit) dual booted with XP. The laptop has a 120GB hard drive but only 7GB is devoted to Peppermint. Can I fairly simply change the amount available? The remaining 113 GB has some 50GB unused.
Sorry if this is rambling and unclear but your help/advice would be appreciated.

Hope this output helps:
derek@derek-MM061 ~ $ sudo fdisk -l
[sudo] password for derek:

Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

General Help & Advice / Gramps
« on: October 07, 2013, 11:52:00 am »
Hi,
I think it was Graeme (Emegra) who recently mentioned that he used the above programme, I do quite a lot of Genealogy and wondered what you thought of this programme. I have installed it on my desktop running Ubuntu 12.04 but it seems a bit complicated though I haven't spent much time with it. Is it worth persevering with and getting used to do you think. Most of my stuff is done using Ancestry.
Any thoughts would be appreciated,

Regards,

Peppermint / Bookmark Button(Solved)

I am at a loss as to where this "bookmark button" is located, it is almost certainly a case of "I can't see for the sake of looking" but can somebody please give me a clue on this?
Many thanks,

Many thanks,
