Hi Goalie - nice to hear from you again.

I'm pleased that the problem was so easily solved. 
Software updates often put an application in an unfamiliar mode and it's sometimes not obvious how one can get back to normal operation.  So you not alone! 

To mark your topic as solved, look at the first post on your topic (not in edit mode yet) and click on the "Modify" button (top right).  This brings up the usual editing page for that post. 
In the Subject (title) line add [SOLVED] to the end of the title so it reads "How do find Address Books on Thunderbird [SOLVED]".  Then save your edit and you are done.

First thing to check:  is the "Mail Toolbar" visible (Get messages, Write, Chat, Address Book etc)? If not,  Try Alt+V then select "Toolbars" and check that "Mail Toolbar" is ticked.  If it is ticked, and the Mail Toolbar is visible but without "Address Book", then we'll have to think again

It might be possible to remove all traces of windows by reformatting the entire disc and reinstalling Linux, but it's a lot of hassle.

The key expression here is "platform MSFT0101:00" where the MSFT indicates that the system has had a Windows OS installed.  Windows seems to cling on to bits of the disk even when removed. 

If the system is working perfectly then I would live with it.  How long does your PC take to boot up?  If it's less than 1min then I doubt that there is much value in worrying about the issue. 
I did find this:  "Usually the messages are an indication the Linux kernel was expecting the BIOS to be written according to certain specs and found it was not. Unless you are having problems, then you can ignore these." at https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=358918

I can't help you at all with Windows - sorry: perhaps another member can suggest something.  But I advise you to back up all your personal files before you do anything else!   
If the PC is used solely for homework and basic office work, then is there a need for Windows?  Might be an opportunity to guide the family towards a real operating system.  [is my bias showing?]

If you want to install Linux and dump Windows, then you can do this easily.  What you can't do is re-install Windows if Linux is already on the PC.  Linux is happy to install alongside anything, but Windows is not that flexible.  Is it just Windows on the PC? 

First thing is to back up all your personal files, and you can do that easily by using a Linux Live Disc/USB.  If you've used Live discs before then you're almost there and we can help you over any hurdles.

You don't mention anything about your computer/OS - please always do so as it helps us to help you. 

In the absence of such info, try this: place your cursor over the offending icon, and hold down the right mouse-button. If this produces a drop-down menu scroll down to highlight "Move to Trash" (or similar), and release the mouse button.

Let us know the outcome.

If I've understood correctly, you have two machines and you are trying to install Puppy in a VM before (all being well) installing it on "an old laptop". 
You say that the Live Disc works well on one PC (not the old one?) but not in the VM.  If that's the case, then I wouldn't have any qualms about simply trying Puppy on the old laptop via a Live Disc and installing it if it runs well.  I have not had any problems with installations and VMs always introduce an extra level of uncertainty.

tldextract accurately separates the gTLD or ccTLD (generic or country codetop-level domain) from the registered domain and subdomains of a URL. Bydefault, this package supports the public ICANN TLDs and their exceptions,with optional support for the Public Suffix List's private domains as well..This package installs the library for Python 3.


Which I take to mean that it's for sorting out complicated web addresses. the .tld_set_snapshot appears to include the Japan country code "jp" which supports this idea.
