Ubuntu / Blank windows
« on: October 29, 2011, 03:23:18 pm »
Hi
I am having problems, I am resizing  things manually and by clicking on Maximise and getting the same result, they are openning to the full size and just showing a white background?
I have to manually resize them down until something actually appears, sometimes, e.g.using the browser, I have to use the slider bar to see the rest of the image.
Is there something I am missing?

then compile and install it .. not the easiest route, as you will have to resolve any dependencies yourself.

or

2) Add this PPA to your sources:
https://launchpad.net/~jre-phoenix/+archive/ppa
then install the pgl package from within one of your package managers.

If you need assistance .. just ask :)

Think I'll give it a miss for now as I have no idea how to sort out number 1 and with number 2, does that make it permanent or can it be activated when needed.

Thanks anyways, Pete

Do you know how to install software from either of the package managers (Synaptic, or the Ubuntu Software Centre) ? .. or from the command line ?

If not, open a terminal by hitting Ctrl+Alt+T (at the same time), then when the terminal opens, enter:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install hplip-gui xsane

Sorry, it's all new to me (Windows convert).
I have just found the HP Device Manager and the deskjet 3070A is not on the list so it's not installed yet.
(Just installed it but it couldnt find 3070 so gave me 3050 instead, hope that has scan too)
I have the disk that came with it but don't know how to use it on this OS, I put it in and closed the drawer but Ubuntu didn't do anything with it?

Printers and Scanners / HP Deskjet 3070A
« on: October 28, 2011, 11:29:43 pm »
I have just (honest, literally) converted to Ubuntu and need help with my printer.

On a sidenote; I can't believe my luck that HP's are such well supported printers, having just binned a Lexmark X1150 All-In-One, which was around 7 years old, Only binning it due to the fact that I couldn't get it to re-install onto my XP Pro OS.
Due to that, I bought the HP Deskjet 3070A.

What my problem now is, I cant scan with it (not even tried printing yet) but it is in the list of printers, I cant see the scan option (where do I look).
So I went to the HP site and had a look to see if I could get the latest full install SW for it but when I found it, I was well over my head as the install was to me (an ex Windows user) very daunting, so I gave up.
And the fact that it didn't support the version of Ubuntu I have, which is 11.10 and the supplied version was 11.04. I didn't want to fubar my new OS so soon.

You were right, it WAS the TV card causing problems, I took it out and it's now working. Going through the install process.

Thanks  :)

I'm thinking that too but unsure as my second monitor is connected to the DVI and the other to the normal connector, when I had problems with that, I connected my old monitor to the onboard output and could see what I was doing. Don't know if it's the TV card causing the problem but I will have a go removing it to see if that works and yes, it is  desktop system I am trying to sort out and talking her via laptop.

I've got a problem.
I burned the 64 bit iso version to disc then rebooted and selected to install on drive c over windows.
I left it installing and left the room, when I came back, the two monitors I have connected to the TV card were blank and telling me there's no signal.
I took the leads out of the TV card and connected them to the onboard output but still no picture.
I dont know what to do now, even rebooted and still nothing, the CD/DVD drawer won't even open?????

Hi and thanks for the quick reply.
The printers I have are, 2 photosmart - 325 & D5460 and a new? Deskjet3070a.
The one to link the Xbox can be used to link most consoles e.g. Playstations, I used to use a different one but it didn't work properly.
I am trying to dowload the .iso files (both 32 and 64 bit) but it's proving a bit tempramental. When I have done this I will 'try it out' first and then if I like it I will install it on my PC.
What I want to do is forget Windows and do a 'Fresh install' - wipe windows, format HD and install Ubuntu as I dont really want to use Windows anymore if Ubuntu is as good as it says it is.
When I install Ubuntu, will it format my HD and then install itself? If not,how do I format my boot drive then install Ubuntu?
