Linux Support / Re: Recommendations please

Thanks everyone. I've been using Asunder and FreeFileSync for a couple of weeks now and I'd recommend both of them.

FreeFileSync  feels slightly less intuitive than Foldermatch, although the features are there if you look around. And, of course, it's free! I like it.

I like Asunder too. There are occasional problems with identifying some CD details - names, tracks etc, but that seems to be down to whichever CDDB you link it to.  99% of the time it's fine, and again, free.

What's not to like?

Thanks Brian,

I couldn't see any way to get VLC to rip a CD, but I've settled on Asunder which seems pretty good. It was unable to download album data until I switched the CDDB server to gnudb.gnudb.org, but now it's fine.

I then checked alternativeto.net and downloaded FreeFileSync which seems very similar to Foldermatch.

So far, so good. I'll wait a few days to see how they go before marking this thread solved...

Thanks Brian,

I'll look at VLC and I've already looked at diff, but I'd really like something more idiot friendly. Windows has Foldermatch which I found really intuitive and capable. I can't find a linux equivalent...

Just my luck!

But Blue Evolution will do very nicely.

Thanks for your help.

I tried that yesterday and again just now, but both themes are light for some reason.

I must have missed something. SociWT didn't work for me. It stayed resolutely light. I'll have another look but probably not tonight. Work tomorrow..

Thanks again. Blue Evolution is fine. SociWT would have to be very good to better it.

Thanks Mad Penguin,

Blue Evolution it is!

Ah, I hadn't thought about the security aspect...

Also I suppose it was a bit of a knee-jerk reaction on my part, for which, apologies. I've now switched to a different theme which I find easier on the eye, and I suppose the interface does look more 2022 than the old one, for obvious reasons. I'd still like a dark mode or at least a darker theme, but having calmed down I'm giving it a thumbs up. Sorry for any offence I may have caused.

Linux Support / Recommendations please [solved]

Hello everyone.

Has anyone got a favourite Linux CD ripper or folder comparison software?

I need both, and for the record, MELD keeps telling me that two folders I know for a fact are completely different, are identical!

TIA

Upgrade?

It's AWFUL.

Sorry. It wasn't broken and didn't need fixing.

Please, Mad Penguin, tell me how to change to another theme. The default hurts my eyes. Just as everyone else is offering dark mode we suddenly get glaring white!

Linux Support / Re: Keyboard and mouse problems

Ok, no more problems since I swapped the mouse and changed the keyboard back, so I'm crossing my fingers and marking this solved.

Thanks very much to everyone who helped. Much appreciated.

I've found a solution to this problem now.

I edited /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and removed a line which said 'autologin-user=m'.

That seems to have solved it, although I'm still baffled as to how I managed to create the problem in the first place!

In an attempt to get gpodder to open on startup, I've been poking around in settings - specifically 'Session and Startup' and 'Users and Groups'.

I haven't managed to get gpodder to run at startup, but I have managed to stop Xubuntu from requiring my password on startup, despite the fact that under my user settings a password is 'asked on startup'.

Anyone have any ideas please? I'm going round in diminishing circles...

TIA

No problems with freezing so far, since I changed the mouse. I'll monitor it a little longer before closing this thread.

I'm having a different problem though, for which I'll open a new thread!!!

Hello Everybody,

I finally built the new computer last thursday and so far it's been fine. Much faster than the old one and very quiet (no spinners).

ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming ATX Motherboard, AMD Socket AM4, Ryzen 3000 Ready (£108.48)
AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Processor with Wraith Stealth Cooler (£214)
Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 DRAM 2666MHz C16 Memory Kit - Black (£32.49)
Kingston 250GB NV1 NVMe PCIe SSD (£23.74)
Total £378.71

I'm very pleased with it. Thank you all  for your help and your time. In the end it was a satisfying experience to build another computer and have it boot first time. I went for 8GB of RAM because that's more than enough for my needs and easily doubled if my requirements change. I'm still marveling at how much easier a build is without all those bulky HDDs and ribbon cables. Not to mention that the motherboard doesn't need an I/O shield.I've always found them to be the thing that made me curse the most after the first three or four attempts to get them in place.

Keith - I didn't need a new PSU. The existing one was younger than the rest of the box. I replaced it when the original one failed and killed a couple of hard drives!

All in all very pleased, but here's the surprise. It didn't fix the original problem! Unbelievable. It's essentially a completely different computer yet the problem persisted. I swapped the keyboard and that didn't work, so I swapped the mouse. So far so good...

I won't close this thread right now as I'm waiting to see whether the mouse was the culprit, If it was I'm down about £350 but, as I said, I'm very pleased with the new build. Not least because it's capable of running more VMs without breaking a sweat. And £378.71 isn't a lot to pay for this kind of upgrade.
