Sorry Mark try and make it clearer. When I first installed Mint as a duel boot in case the windows side became corrupted I copied my docs, pics music  to Mint from the Windows side.So once Mint is on it's own drive obviously music/ pics will work but how about the other windows created docs.?

Am I right in thinking that any Windows files i have copied/ moved to Mint from the mounted Windows (device) will no longer be usable once the OS's are moved to separate drives?

I though that was one of the reasons but are there any other benefits. Also would it be quicker to copy my files across and reinstall Mint or could I clone my set up as whole and put it on new drive?

Currently dual booting W8 pro with Mint 19.1 is it worth getting a 2nd hard drive( cheap enough) and loading the OS separately?

If the OP is worried about not being able to boot back into Windows if Mint is removed then this will fix it.In windows open command and run  BootRec.exe/FixMbr

I would not give up just yet.  I am running a windows 7 and mint 18.2 64bit desk top with very few problems.

Mark would it be a good plan to find out the specs of the system and try a number of live USBs to see which version of Linux is the best.

For me I always find windows takes longer to start then mint.
I'm running a 6 year old machine with W8 pro and Mint 19 with no problems.

I have done it the other way around ie installing Mint 19 along side Windows 8 so I'm pretty sure it must be doable the other way round.Worst case scenario would be to back up your  Peppermint install Windows and then reinstall Peppermint as a dual boot.Pretty sure Mark will be able to point you in the right direction.
