Keith I'm sorry I keep doing silly mistakes. What has happened now is the padlock icons have disappeared and I have to open up each individual folder and file to check. Its the 'doc' and 'xls' files that are opening as 'read only' so its going to be a long job.

I don't fully understand your last message and I'm worried about the amount of your time I'm taking up so is there another way we could use?

No problem Keith you are being really helpful.

I understood what you meant about commands Ctrl+c and Crtl+Shift+v that I press the keys to enter the Terminal, what I was not so sure about was why I had to type the command Ctrl+Shift+t at the start of opening Terminal.

Here is result of your latest instruction:-
[email protected]:~$ df | grep media
/dev/sdb1       60456992 43655168  16801824  73% /media/kevin/PHILIPS UFD
[email protected]:~$

Hope I've done it correctly.

Keith.

Thanks for your reply and patience I've got to 6. in your instructions but can't get further, tried various ways without success probably something simple I'm doing wrong.

[email protected]:~$ Ctrl+Shift+t.df | grep media
Ctrl+Shift+t.df: command not found
[email protected]:~$

Hi Everybody.

I had a "senior moment" my last reply was written not realising that my reply which I sent on Tues evening had been posted. I've looked at the replies from you all and have to admit I'm confused. So if its not too much trouble could we start again on this problem, if I don't fully understand your commands I'll ask before I do it.

Is this okay with you if not I won't be offended.

Regards

Goalie

Hi Keith & Graeme.

Thanks for both your replies and suggestions on how to solve the 'locked files' problem. I was busy yesterday with domestic chores and have not had chance to study your replies. What I should have told you previously is that I'm nearly 81 years but have a 'young' outlook. However whilst I'm fairly comfortable using the computer I struggle sometimes with the computer technology and language e.g. what is GUI etc. So if I don't quite follow your commands please bare with me. I will study your messages from yesterday and get back to a.s.a.p.

Hope that's okay with you both.

Regards

Goalie

Hi Keith & Graeme.

Once again I thank you both for your help with my 'locked' files problem. What I should have told you earlier is I'm nearly 81 and whilst I'm reasonably comfortable using the computer I'm not up to speed with the terminology used in computers so If I'm not understanding correctly your instructions please bare with me.

I've not had chance to sit down and study your replies, I have to help out with domestic chores with my wife. I'm expecting a phone call from one of my sons this evening so if its okay with you both I'll come back to tomorrow on this problem. I'm comfortable using the mouse for controls but willing to learn how to use Ctrl+shift etc. I note that whilst I've been away having tea that you have both been busy trying to resolve my problem, I need to have good look at them tomorrow to see if I can make understand better what you are both proposing I should do to resolve this problem.

So I'll be back in touch tomorrow.

Regards
Goalie

Keith.

I hope I'm not giving you a hard time. Here is the result of my attempt at following your commands and I don't think its come out as you expected.

[email protected]:~$ cd "/media/kevin/PHILIPS UFD" ls -l
bash: cd: too many arguments

Sorry Keith.

Spoke to soon, just rechecked my usb folders and files and noticed that the xls files and doc are still in "read only" format but not showing any 'padlock' icon but the 'pdf' and 'photo' files are okay.

So we are nearly there do I have to go through all the 'read only' files individually to resolve this?

Goalie
