Installing VLC 2.1.0 for Ubuntu Natty Narwhal or lower.
« on: March 31, 2012, 11:29:36 pm »
Many people running versions of Ubuntu Natty Narwhal or lower, or even people with distros based on Natty Narwhal (e.g. Peppermint 2) will find that they can't get the latest VLC 2.1.0 update from the site. Good news is, there's a PPA for those who happen to be on "old" versions of Ubuntu or distros based on them.

A simple tutorial, nothing fancy. Quick, easy & painless.

Terminal commands:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:videolan/master-daily

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install vlc

For a new features list see here:

If you try to look through Windows, you can see what the person is doing.
If you try to look through a Penguin, it WILL bite you.

Can I update my version of VLC? I am running version 1.1.12 on 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot
The PPA I'm using is;
http://ppa.launchpad.net/n-muench/vlc/ubuntu oneiric main

is this correct?

Yeah the PPA will work for Oneiric. Although I'm positive 2.1.0 is in the repo's. Be sure to check first. :)

Nope, checked the Ubuntu Software Centre and its still 1.1.12.2 and in my Synaptic Package Manager it's the same latest version as I've got installed.

Did you use the PPA update? If you did, open VLC then goto Help > About VLC

That will tell you the version you have INSTALLED.
