Ubuntu 12.04 and nVidia 295.40 driver warning - UPDATE
« on: May 02, 2012, 04:57:42 pm »
nVidia has posted a warning on their Linux forum:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=178460
concerning a serious issue with the GeForce 6, 7, and 8800 GTS/GTX cards, and their latest 295.40 driver.

295.40 is the default nVidia driver installed in Ubuntu 12.04

Quote
We have been made aware of an interaction problem between the fix contained in the newest release any any card with a chip older than G80, inclusive. This includes the full GeForce 6 and 7 series as well as GeForce 8800GTX and first-gen 8800GTS. We are actively working on resolving this issue and will provide an update as soon as possible.

The symptoms can include graphical corruption, performance issues, crashes and temporary hangs.

The release should be perfectly safe to use with more recent cards than that; I'll update this thread ASAP.

Thanks,
- Pierre-Loup

Until a fix is released, you can run 12.04 in Ubuntu 2D mode as is, then uninstall the 295.40 driver and install the 295.33 driver which can be downloaded here:-
64bit:
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/295.33/
32bit:
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/295.33/
Be sure to follow the instructions in the README located in the 295.33 download directory.

Or you could try the 302.07 beta drivers linked from this page:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=179882

BE AWARE - ONLY change the drivers IF you are experiencing any of the listed issues.
