Hi, it didn't work. The screen that was blank (following the Dell screen) now shows the following information:

error: file not found.
grub rescue>

Can you open your file manager (menu>file Manager) and tell me if the left hand column still has a directory called "emily" and NOT one called "peppermint"

OK, I think I know what's happened .. you ARE actually running Peppermint from the hard drive (NOT the LiveUSB) .. somehow you managed to install stage 1 of the GRUB bootloader to the LiveUSB stick, which then point to the hard drive installation .. so you ARE running from the hard drive, but it can't boot without the LiveUSB plugged in.

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo grub-install /dev/sda
and reboot to the hard drive.

Yup .. unless there's anything else not working .. but you can always come back with other questions :)

Is your wireless working ?

[EDIT]

One other thing .. you might want to recreate that LiveUSB at some point .. if someone ever asks you to boot to your LiveUSB, it's broken (as GRUB stage 1 got written to it) .. its always handy to have a working LiveUSB in case you need it for fixing a broken system.

You'll know if it's working properly if when you boot to it there is NO drive called "emily" but there IS one called "peppermint" .. and there's an icon on the desktop called "Install Peppermint" ;)

Sure .. first let's check the wireless card is being detected .. open a terminal and post the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network

BTW, also read the edit I made to my last response .. no need to do that now, but at some point it would be a good idea.

OK, I seem to be getting conflicting reports as to the best driver/firmware for your wireless card .. so I think the best course of action would be to do a full system upgrade, then stick with the drivers its selected by default and see how it goes .. if the connection then seems "iffy" (eg. keeps dropping out) we'll try the lpphy (low power) firmware.

So first for the full system update .. open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get upgrade
and if necessary hit "y" to accept the updates.

When that's done and leaves you back at an "$" prompt .. REBOOT.

Once rebooted, click the NetworkManager icon in the system tray (bottom left of screen, by the clock) .. can you see YOUR router in the list ?

If so, click it .. you should then be prompted for your wireless key .. enter it and click "Connect" (remember your wireless key IS case sensitive) .. did it connect ?

Are you now able to access the internet without the ethernet cable ?

If so, reboot to test it connects automatically .. does it ?

If so, test it for a while and make sure it doesn't keep dropping the connection.

Hi again,
I got as far as entering the second the command and left it to finish. I am now presented with a Package configuration screen asking me where to put the "Grub Install Devices". I will forward a screen shot in a moment.
