So what was it called ? .. you're not giving me any clues that will steer me to the specific application, and without knowing that I can't find out where it stores the notes.

I think Mako might be talking about (in first post) the Gnome2 version of Sticky Notes (Ubuntu 10.04)
cat ~/.gnome2/stickynotes_applet
This should show the content of the data file (xml).
Apparently Tomboy can import this data.

Yeah, that's it, thanks. Though it has truncated the top of the note. How do I reinstall it?

According to this (http://pkgs.org/ubuntu-10.04/ubuntu-main-i386/gnome-applets_2.30.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb.html) page it looks like it is part of the gnome-applets package.

To re-install (but I would try to re add it to the panel first):
sudo apt-get install gnome-applets
Then to add to the panel, right click on the place you want the Sticky notes applet to appear, select Add to panel..., Sticky notes.
It will appear as a yellow icon that looks like a block of post-it notes.

Great. Thanks. It's back. Completely forgot where and how you got those applets. Duh. Thought it was relatively simple, but then sometimes so am I.
